gcb pr now matches the gcb gh defaults and routes the remaining direct gh action through the catalog:
--host defaults to github.com; empty, valueless, or option-looking --host values are refused
--repo defaults to the checkout's origin only when omitted; empty, valueless, or option-looking --repo values are refused
--number --title/--body/--base now runs gh pr edit through the action catalog
update values use --flag=value, so a body file beginning with --- is preserved
unknown options are rejected using the parser's normalized names, including -merge; values are not mistaken for options
unknown positionals are rejected
the custom merge lifecycle is removed, since merge is not an agent action
Tests cover the defaults, refusals, origin repository resolution, update routing, front-matter bodies, unknown options, option-looking values, the anchor rule, and the removed merge path.
corepack yarn check: 331 pass.

Updates
Host and repository options are optional when their values can be determined. Invalid options, missing or invalid values, and unexpected positional arguments are rejected.
Changes
Pull requests can no longer be merged through this command; merging remains a manual action on GitHub.

Walkthrough
gcb pr defaults an omitted host to github.com and resolves an omitted repository from the origin remote. Pull-request updates run through gh pr edit using the pr:edit action. The broker and GitHub provider no longer handle pull-request merges.
The action catalog adds pr:edit with a required pull-request number, optional title, body, and base flags, and pull_requests: write permission. Pull-request types remove merge-related fields.
CLI repository and update routing packages/cli/src/support.ts, packages/client/src/commands/pr.ts, test/unit/commands.test.ts
The command validates options, defaults the host to github.com, resolves an omitted repository from origin, and routes updates through gh pr edit. Tests cover validation, repository resolution, action dispatch, body-file handling, and default-host requests.
The broker and provider remove merge-specific validation, API calls, and response fields. Guidance and tests no longer describe or exercise pull-request merging.
code-vaults/git-credential-broker#24: Routes catalogued pull-request subcommands through gcb gh; this PR adds pr:edit and routes updates through gh pr edit.
code-vaults/git-credential-broker#22: Adds origin-based repository resolution and host matching for gcb gh; this PR applies the behavior to gcb pr.

Assert the host sent to the broker.
This test stops at no broker socket, before requestOverSocket sends a request. It would also pass if the required-host guard were removed but the request still omitted host. Capture one request with a test socket and assert that host equals github.com. Keep this case as the separate validation test. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Read the six commits at f1a3859 and ran corepack yarn check (325 pass). The catalog routing and the merge/update removal are the right shape, but two client regressions and one test that no longer tests its claim should be fixed before this is ready.
1. --merge / --method now silently become an update — packages/client/src/commands/pr.ts:117, :233
--merge was removed from booleans but nothing refuses it, so actionOf falls through to update whenever --number is present. With a title/body/base also present, the command now performs an edit where it used to merge:
That is the one semantic inversion in the PR: a merge invocation edits the pull request instead. Please refuse both flags next to the --close guard (before the repository work, so the pointer is what the caller sees), and add a test. Something like:
if(args.has('merge')||args.value('merge')!==undefined){fail('there is no merge action: merging is a human action on GitHub');}if(args.has('method')||args.value('method')!==undefined){fail('--method was removed with --merge: there is no merge action');}
2. --body-file content beginning with -- breaks the update path — packages/client/src/commands/pr.ts:236
The body is handed to runGh as a separate token, and its parser deliberately treats a following --… token as a flag rather than a value. A body file starting with YAML front matter is enough:
The same body file works on the open path, and gcb gh pr edit 7 … '--body=---…' works, so this is specific to the new route. Pass the values in --flag=value form when building ghArgs:
I verified that form against both a front-matter body and --merge with a temporary copy; both behave as expected. A test using a body file that starts with --- would keep this covered.
3. The broker anchor test no longer tests the anchor rule — test/unit/broker.test.ts:381
Now that merge is not a valid action, this request is refused by the earlier action check, not by anchored && action !== 'comment', so the assertion still passes but the claim (“an anchor only belongs on a comment”) is no longer exercised. Use a valid non-comment action such as status, as the client-side test was already changed to do.
Minor
--repo '' used to be caught by the if (!repo) fail(...) check; after defaulting, an explicitly empty --repo now reaches the broker. Keeping an empty check after the origin resolution restores the client-side error without changing the new default.
The guidance says a new catalog action comes with a test; test/unit/actions.test.ts only adds the name. A buildGhArgv('pr:edit', { number: 7, title: 't', base: 'main' }, 'acme/widget') assertion would cover the new positionals/flags.
The pr edit catalog entry itself (endpoint comment, pull_requests: write, hostUser: true) looks consistent with the other actions.

Re-reviewed eabe4c78 (the four follow-ups on top of f1a3859). All three findings are addressed:
--merge / --method are refused before the action is selected, so a merge invocation can no longer fall through to pr:edit.
The update route now builds --title=…, --body=… and --base=…; a front-matter body file reaches pr:edit intact.
The broker anchor test now uses status, so it exercises the anchor rule again.
--repo is refused when valueless or empty, unknown flags and stray positionals are refused, and the pr:edit catalog entry has a buildGhArgv assertion.
Verified: corepack yarn check → 330 pass, all CI jobs green, and I re-ran the merge/front-matter/repo/positional cases against a stub socket. No blockers from me. A minor note only: removed flags now read as unknown option --merge rather than a --close-style pointer, which is acceptable.

Re-reviewed 58d01f8 on top of my approval of eabe4c78.
The normalized-name change is the right fix: parseArgs now exposes names, so -merge is validated as merge after normalization while values remain values (--title=--not-a-flag and --title -merge both reach pr:edit with the intended title). I re-ran -merge, the two title-value forms, the front-matter body update and --close against a stub socket; all behave correctly.
corepack yarn check → 330 pass; CI is green; mergeable. No blockers.
Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.
Reject option-looking values for --host and --repo.
parseArgs consumes -h and other letter-prefixed single-dash tokens as values before normalizing them. Therefore, gcb pr --repo -h --number 1 --title X and gcb pr --host -h --repo owner/name --number 1 --title X bypass the valueless and unknown-option checks. The invalid value reaches the broker in the gh pr edit request.
A global parseArgs change is not the single safe correction. gcb gh documents single-dash operands as values for preceding value options, and other commands share this parser. Reject option-looking values at the gcb pr boundary.

Re-reviewed 05def2b4.
The looksLikeOption guard is correctly scoped: it mirrors parseArgs's single-dash normalization, and only applies to --host / --repo, where a leading -<letter> cannot be valid anyway. --repo -h, --repo -merge and --host -h now fail locally; a legitimate git.example-host.com still reaches the broker, and the normal update/front-matter routes are unchanged.

Re-reviewed 912eee79.
The validation now checks every occurrence via args.values(), and looksLikeOption also rejects values beginning with --, so the repeated-flag and --repo=--help / --host=--help gaps are closed.
