Fixes the SSH-provider portion of devsy-org/devsy#1621. Both transports use one login-shell-safe /bin/sh -c launcher carrying the exact original multiline script as one argument. Bash, Zsh and Fish receive identical command bytes; stdin remains available for injection and the live tunnel. Companion core draft: devsy-org/devsy#1627.

Both transports preserve stdout bytes, stream stderr separately, retain context/process/source errors, and join stdin copying on completion or cancellation. Initialization uses the same executor, quotes paths, rejects unexpected stdout and leaves caller stdin untouched. Removes the obsolete Fish/SCP fallback.

At the user's request, this PR contains no verification document and no direct cancelreader dependency or imports. Its original indirect requirement is unchanged from main through the pinned core E2E framework and Bubble Tea; no dependency versions changed. Owned adapters preserve caller-owned files: Unix uses a poll wakeup pipe without changing descriptor flags, Windows redirected pipes retain owned duplicate handles, and console reads use owned handles and synchronized cancellation. The core module stays v1.23.2; E2E CLI downloads pin v1.24.0 with a local-binary override.

Current signed head: a14daf32a27e4efa253a913bc067f35261fd9a3c. Both checkout steps now disable credential persistence; no later step needs authenticated Git operations. Local race-enabled unit tests, applicable hooks, Windows-target lint/test compilation, and bounded independent reviews pass. Tests cover real-shell arguments, byte/exit/stderr transparency, setup-phase cancellation, late source errors, idle and unread input, once-only cleanup, caller-file flags/reuse, and pipe bytes/EOF.

All seven current-head CI check runs and six workflows pass. Linux integration passed 18/18 specs with zero skips: released v1.24.0 core workspace startup (39.118 s), exact workspace SSH output (1.602 s), and cleanup (1.386 s), default Bash/Linux amd64. The native Windows job passes redirected-pipe and private-console cancellation tests. This is Windows runner qualification, not Desktop GUI acceptance. Earlier actual OpenSSH all-shell qualification is historical, not a new final-head runtime matrix or real-agent cold-transfer claim.

All five serial snapshot targets pass. GoReleaser reports 9m17s build time (about 9m19s for the workflow step), version 0.0.0-SNAPSHOT-1d27a39, from synthetic merge 1d27a393078bafa2462df9ad80b6b6fd9ac08ac0. Its parents are base 839369fc438c4616bace5ee15994ab42b0fd0773 and PR head a14daf32a27e4efa253a913bc067f35261fd9a3c; merge and head share tree 006d80ac3f9fc4acace710c1f4760d0867b9c37f. Artifact checksums are build metadata, not independently downloaded digest verification.

All seven prior review findings are addressed and resolved. Fresh Greptile explicitly covers a14daf3 at 5/5 with no blocking issues. The configured GitHub CodeRabbit full review completed at 2026-10-21 04:56:55 UTC, explicitly setting sourceCommitId and coveredCommitId to a14daf3. It processed 23 files and reports no actionable comments or architecture-level concerns. The command acknowledgement confirms Full review finished. All seven prior threads remain resolved; no new inline findings were posted. Prior c9 reviews are historical. The separate local CodeRabbit CLI source-upload gate remains blocked by automatic approval review pending direct user authorization; GitHub review does not substitute for it. This PR remains draft and unmerged; no tag, release or customer reply was performed.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added built-in SSH support for remote commands and initialization.
    • Added reliable stdin, stdout, and stderr streaming, including binary data and exit-status handling.
    • Added cancellation and deadline support for SSH operations.
    • Added Windows support for redirected and console input scenarios.
    • Added integration coverage for Bash, Zsh, and Fish login shells.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved handling of interrupted commands, remote failures, and input read errors.
    • Prevented startup diagnostics from contaminating command output.
  • Documentation

    • Documented remote shell requirements, supported shells, SSH prerequisites, and input behavior.

Final audit confirms the current head remains draft and clean, all eight CI/Greptile check runs and six workflows pass, CodeRabbit status is Review completed, and GitHub verifies the Samuel K author/committer signature. CodeRabbit's docstring-coverage warning (5.32% vs 80%, including private helpers and tests) is accepted as no-action: important stream ownership/cancellation contracts are documented, and blanket comments would restate self-documenting names. The pinned core's former NewSSHClient and current identity configuration both use ConfigFromKeyBytes; read-only dependency inspection confirms the host-key callback is unchanged. All GitHub gates are complete, but the separate local CLI source-upload gate remains approval-blocked, so this draft is not declared fully ready. No merge, tag or release was performed.

📝 Walkthrough

The SSH provider now runs remote commands with caller-supplied contexts and streams. It adds cancellable stdin handling across Unix and Windows, remote initialization checks, CLI signal cancellation, and expanded tests, CI coverage, and documentation.

Changes: SSH Execution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Remote command execution and initialization
pkg/ssh/remote_command.go, pkg/ssh/ssh.go, pkg/ssh/remote_command_test.go, pkg/ssh/builtin_test.go, pkg/ssh/builtin_context_test.go, pkg/ssh/init_stdin_test.go
The provider supports built-in and external SSH execution with separate streams, context handling, shell-safe arguments, remote initialization checks, and cancellation tests.
Stdin cancellation and ownership
pkg/ssh/stdin_copy.go, pkg/ssh/stdin_lifecycle_test.go, pkg/ssh/input_*.go, pkg/ssh/input_*_test.go, go.mod
Stdin copying tracks source and destination errors. Unix and Windows input handlers support cancellation, byte preservation, cleanup, and caller-owned input retention.
CLI context and stream wiring
cmd/command.go, cmd/init.go, cmd/root.go, cmd/root_unix_test.go
CLI commands pass execution contexts and process streams to SSH operations. Root execution handles interrupt and SIGTERM cancellation, with subprocess tests for cancellation and remote exit status.
Integration coverage and verification
e2e/tests/integration/*, .github/workflows/tests.yaml, README.md
E2E coverage tests Bash, Zsh, and Fish with built-in and external SSH modes. CI provisions the shell matrix and adds a Windows input test. The README documents remote shell requirements.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to a14da

SSH commands and initialization now honor interrupts and keep stdin, stdout, and stderr separate on both transports. Earlier concerns about cancellation reporting, consumed input, and CI credentials have been addressed. No outstanding issues block merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to a14da

The change improves command quoting, stream separation, and cancellation handling. No introduced security defect was established, but uncertainty about endpoint verification and downstream API compatibility prevents a minimal-risk assessment.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Production execution remains scoped to the caller-configured SSH destination and authenticated account, which may already have root, sudo, or Docker authority. The inspected changes do not introduce a tenant-wide or multi-host execution mechanism. The new integration matrix targets three accounts on the local test runner.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — COMMAND remains an intentionally executable caller-provided script, not untrusted data rendered harmless by quoting. The new launcher protects its passage through the outer login shell; configured initialization paths are separately quoted as data.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — External SSH retains its pre-existing StrictHostKeyChecking=no default. Builtin SSH resolves the selected identity and user, then delegates key configuration to ConfigFromKeyBytes. The unavailable dependency implementation leaves its host-key verification policy unresolved; unchanged dependency versions alone do not prove equivalence with the former NewSSHClient path.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Execution resources and stdin-copy state are per invocation, supporting failure containment without closing caller-owned files. This guarantee depends on the documented exclusive-reader requirement and on non-file ReadClosers unblocking concurrent reads when closed; it is not a guarantee for arbitrary blocking readers.

RetriggerView in GreptileConfidence Score: 5/5

[Medium impact] The changes appear safe to merge; no blocking issue remains.

Summary

The PR runs SSH bootstrap scripts through a shared /bin/sh launcher and improves stream separation, cancellation, and input cleanup.

  • SSH commands reach /bin/sh safely through either transport.
  • SSH sessions stop blocked input reads when they end or get canceled.
  • Initialization runs its remote checks through the same shell-safe SSH path.
