Refs #1621. Companion draft: devsy-org/devsy-provider-ssh#152.

Agent installation uses constant POSIX shell code with literal positional arguments across direct, sudo, and su dispatch. Paths, URLs, and version predicates preserve metacharacters and reject NUL. The SSH-provider companion selects /bin/sh before the login shell parses the script, including Fish; interactive shells and native driver argv retain their existing contracts.

Replacement agents are staged beside the destination, checked for a complete transfer, set to readable/executable 0755, then atomically renamed. Failed transfer or preparation leaves the prior agent intact. /bin/sh is preferred; only DOCKERLESS=true containers lacking an executable /bin/sh may use their existing fixed /.dockerless/bin/sh bundle.

Validation:

  • Focused race tests pass for pkg/inject, pkg/agent, pkg/agent/delivery, pkg/config, and pkg/ssh/server. Persistent product tests cover direct and sudo/su dispatch, Dockerless selection, hostile literal arguments, exact binary/live NUL bytes, error propagation, and prior-agent preservation. Strict dispatcher doubles are distinct from actual privilege qualification.
  • Actual Linux ARM64 non-root + real sudo checks reproduced root-owned 0711 self-read denial and verified 0755 with the same synthetic native ELF and exact live exchange. This tests the permissions mechanism, not a full Devsy-agent qualification.
  • Product-source head a7dbc08e68b84ded40be9de34cbbc0416f21ae53 passed all 90 Actions jobs and fresh Greptile 5/5. Signed follow-up 535444860f9ab70fe9dbc2b344e96bcb032a9a58 removes the entire issue-specific verification directory, including its helpers and helper-only tests, as requested. GitHub verifies the signature; CLI CI lint passes with zero issues. File-based hooks have no remaining files to check for this deletion. Product-source hashes and persistent product tests are unchanged. Current 535444860f9ab70fe9dbc2b344e96bcb032a9a58 CI is terminal green: all applicable checks pass, with three expected Desktop skips and neutral preview/queue contexts. Fresh Greptile reviewed exact 535444860f9ab70fe9dbc2b344e96bcb032a9a58 at 5/5 with no new findings (11 files, source review). Completed GitHub CodeRabbit full review covers exact 535444860f9ab70fe9dbc2b344e96bcb032a9a58 and all 11 changed files with no actionable findings. All five actionable review threads are resolved. GitHub verifies Samuel K as author/committer and the commit signature. Its automated docstring-percentage warning does not identify a missing behavior contract; the exported quoting helper is documented, and no metric-only comments were added.

Linux CI retains both snapshot architectures but serializes compilation after confirmed runner disk-quota failures. Read-only diagnostics and the 45-minute bound preserve all tests and targets. Ordinary Dockerless tests passed on ARM64 and emulated AMD64; the original Kubernetes native stream failure remains unproven, with a separate preexisting all-streams-nil cleanup issue. Native argv routing is unchanged.

Provider #152 has the user-requested cleanup at df18ed496f3acd1b3e9dfaf4fdfb42eb43c15f8a: its verification document and direct cancelreader usage/requirement are removed. The baseline indirect dependency remains unchanged. Local cancellation adapters using the existing OS API dependency passed local race/static checks. Test-only follow-up c9f0c669db947ba57bf972c231b35b87b84e9c5a corrects the console fixture to allow only zero-byte EOF or closed errors after explicit Close, preserving readiness, bounded joins and caller ownership; product code is unchanged. Current-head native Windows tests now pass, including the corrected console fixture. All seven provider checks and six workflows pass, including five-platform builds and 18/18 Bash/Linux CLI specs with no skips. The subsequent workflow-only fix a14daf32a27e4efa253a913bc067f35261fd9a3c disables checkout credential persistence in both test jobs. Product source is unchanged; current-head CI now passes all seven provider checks, including serial five-target builds, Linux integration, and native Windows tests. Fresh Greptile covers exact a14daf32a27e4efa253a913bc067f35261fd9a3c at 5/5, and completed GitHub CodeRabbit full review covers all 23 changed files with no actionable findings. All seven provider threads are resolved and its signature is verified. The prior native EOF assertion failure and c9 CI/review results are historical. Earlier released-core v1.24.0 Bash/Linux AMD64 CLI up/SSH/cleanup results are historical and do not establish fixed-core whole-workspace acceptance across every login shell.

The separate local CodeRabbit CLI source upload remains BLOCKED by automatic approval review pending direct user authorization; GitHub bot review does not substitute for it. Local whole-workspace CLI/Desktop acceptance remains unverified after the separately rejected privileged Docker fixture; no privilege workaround was used. Native customer hardware and published-artifact acceptance remain unverified. Both PRs remain draft and unmerged; no release, issue closure, or customer communication is requested.

📝 Walkthrough

The changes update SSH injection input validation, shell quoting, installer execution, binary staging, and error reporting. They add integration coverage, adjust Linux CI and troubleshooting guidance, and change command and cancellation-cause ordering in a Unix test executor.

Changes: SSH Injection and Verification

Layer / File(s) Summary
Injection input and execution contracts
pkg/inject/script.go, pkg/agent/inject.go, pkg/inject/inject.go, pkg/inject/script_test.go, pkg/agent/inject_literal_test.go
Script generation and agent version checks reject NUL bytes and quote literal shell values. Parameter-construction errors propagate, and pre-execution failures report that execution did not start. Tests cover literal handling and validation.
Installer execution and binary publishing
pkg/inject/inject.sh, pkg/inject/dockerless_test.go, pkg/inject/installer_modes_test.go, pkg/inject/script_test.go
The installer selects a shell and execution mode, stages streamed or downloaded binaries, validates transfer size, and propagates failures. Tests cover shell selection, privileged modes, payload handling, and failure cases.
CI coverage and Linux troubleshooting
.github/workflows/pr-ci.yml, sites/docs-devsy-sh/content/docs/troubleshooting/linux-troubleshooting.mdx
Linux CI adds BusyBox-backed injection test coverage and changes CLI build timeout, snapshot parallelism, and disk-usage reporting. The troubleshooting guide documents login-shell and bootstrap requirements.

Cancellation Test Ordering

Layer / File(s) Summary
Command and cancellation-cause ordering
pkg/agent/delivery/exec_stream_cancellation_unix_test.go
The test executor runs the command before reporting a non-nil cancellation cause for stdin-backed attempts. The asynchronous observer and related synchronization were removed.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 53544

This change makes SSH agent injection safer: shell inputs are passed as literal values, invalid NUL inputs are rejected, and the previous agent survives a failed replacement. Earlier problems with permissions and documentation have been fixed, and no unresolved defect has been found. The change is ready to merge after the usual CI checks.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 53544

The changes strengthen handling of installation inputs and preserve the existing agent when replacement fails before publication. No introduced security vulnerability was established. End-to-end protection still depends on the remote executor selecting the expected shell, and the companion SSH-provider behavior could not be verified here.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The sensitive outcome is executable publication on the selected workspace, machine, or container, potentially under root installer authority. A compromise of that authority or execution contract could affect the target runtime, not merely the staged file. No new cross-tenant, control-plane, or infrastructure authority expansion was established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The canonical security assessment retains no findings. Hostile-input tests exercise POSIX-shell literal preservation and absence of command-substitution side effects. These support the inner quoting control, but do not prove the external provider's parser selection or authorization of production configuration inputs.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The strengthened boundary separates literal installation data from privileged shell code. It does not sandbox caller-supplied Command or ExistsCheck. That executable-code contract and provider-owned outer parsing existed in the base; the comparison did not establish a new bypass or increased authority through them.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The reviewed lifecycle improves failure containment before rename. Replacement ownership follows the selected staging authority rather than copying the old inode's owner. Cleanup is best-effort under termination and cannot guarantee removal after uncatchable process death. The source does not establish crash-durable publication or protection against an actor already able to mutate the installation directory.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Qualify the released SSH-provider pairing end to end, including a non-POSIX login shell and native-argv execution, and record the compatible provider version. This would close the remaining parser-selection proof gap without changing interactive-shell behavior or treating code-valued inputs as literals.

[Medium impact] The changes since the previous review appear safe to merge.

Summary

The PR quotes bootstrap inputs, rejects NUL bytes, and stages replacement agents before an atomic rename.

  • Agent setup keeps shell inputs literal and runs through a POSIX shell.
  • A replacement agent is published only after its file is ready.
  • Linux CI checks bootstrap with BusyBox and tracks snapshot disk use.
