What and why

Desktop accepted explicit workspace IDs such as Backend and backend.api that the backend rejected. A detached worker could fail before claiming its task, leaving Desktop following a nonterminal task indefinitely.

  • Share the established ASCII lowercase/digits/dashes, maximum-48-character ID contract. Reject explicit invalid IDs before task creation and derive valid suggestions without changing local paths or Git URLs.
  • Claim worker tasks before fallible initialization and persist terminal failures. Followers keep persisted task outcomes authoritative, retry reconciliation errors, and emit bounded, redacted diagnostics.
  • Use a prepared -> worker-ready -> committed detached launch handoff. Windows creates children inside an exclusively owned Job Object; Unix children inherit a lifetime lease. Cancellation prevents commit. Cleanup completion requires identity-safe process-tree and lifetime evidence; uncertain cleanup stays retryable and blocks deletion.
  • Bind worker admission to the current PID and strong kernel identity before workspace work, readiness writes, or worker-owned failure persistence. A mismatched invocation releases its lock without failing the legitimate task. Legacy pending launches with unknown ownership remain explicitly unverified.
  • Serialize task-state reads with atomic writes on Windows. Task inventories fail closed on lock/read/decode errors so stop/delete cannot proceed with an incomplete worker list. Recognize unreaped macOS zombies without weakening identity checks or signaling authority.
  • Isolate renderer delivery failures from main-owned job completion. Preserve log-save errors separately from status refresh, keeping successful operations visibly unconfirmed until a new command generation retries.
  • Preserve ContextSheet drafts across duplicate initial loads and same-name refreshes; ignore stale responses after close/context changes and show current load errors. This separate defect was reproduced while fixing the unchanged macOS CI gate and is tracked in fix(desktop): context option reloads discard unsaved edits #1651.

Codex Sol 6.1 implemented and independently reviewed the changes. Luna 6 monitored CI and automated reviews. Findings were checked against source, callers, lifecycle contracts and regression evidence.

Local validation

Head: 4592f5c09c11b03416739c0726159b487e1d3bb3, signed by Samuel K.

  • Complete manifest-driven Go unit tier: passed on the final admission source. Full CI diff lint: passed, zero issues. Fresh CLI and full harness builds and the full configured pre-commit passed. All applicable hooks ran; shellcheck/shfmt had no matching files.
  • Admission regressions failed before the fix, then passed: live/exited foreign workers, committed/pending protocol records, weak/stale identities, cancellation, unchanged owner state and released locks, legitimate admission, and owned startup-error persistence. Full up/task race suites passed; Windows tests cross-compiled. The existing Windows manifest regex selects all five new test entrypoints.
  • Fresh current-head CLI and full 510-spec harness builds passed all four native macOS provider-free worker regressions once with the original seed and deadlines. Source and binary pins stayed unchanged; 506 unrelated specs were filtered.
  • Unchanged Desktop source passed 1,098 tests across 87 files, nine focused ContextSheet tests, nine unchanged Contexts/workspace-ID/progress Electron E2E cases, production build, scoped Biome, and official checks before/after artifact removal. Three existing warnings remain.
  • CI retains full Windows command/task/workspace packages plus the original selected worker/follower command tests. require_tests verifies presence without narrowing execution. CodeRabbit withdrew a proposed filter after confirming it would omit 17 of 18 shared helper test entrypoints; coverage is unchanged.
  • The actionlint pin uses its official upstream stdin deadlock fix with unchanged rules and external-checker integrations.

Remote gates

Complete CI is now green on this exact head: all six workflows and all 112 checks are terminal with no failures. Fresh Greptile and CodeRabbit coverage is in progress for this head. Parent dbe74f1 passed all six workflows and 112 checks (105 success, seven expected neutral), Greptile 5/5, and CodeRabbit full 66-file review. Those results are historical, not final-head qualification. All ten prior review threads were resolved.

A retained older architecture concern prompted an additional current-source audit and the identity-bound admission repair above. No concern was dismissed solely because its comment was old. The unsafe legacy fallback was withdrawn after real-process regression evidence showed an exited saved worker cannot prove a later unpublished worker exited.

The parent Windows BuildKit run had one unchanged Ubuntu package-index provisioning timeout before product tests. One targeted rerun passed the same deadlines, verification oracles and all six BuildKit specs. Its original cause remains unknown. No timeout, assertion or coverage was weakened. Earlier SSH failures likewise remain unclassified; later diagnostic runs passed without production SSH changes.

Packaged acceptance limits

Actual AppImage QA applies only to parent 109c6fbc, Linux artifact 12400988545 from Desktop CI 39721350126. Archive, package, transfer and post-run hashes matched; updater state was isolated.

  • Passed through FUSE/Xvfb in an isolated Fedora 44 AMD64 OrbStack guest: uppercase/period ID rejection with accessible error and disabled Launch, corrected lowercase, valid suggestions, and unchanged mixed-case/dotted local and Git sources.
  • A Docker task persisted succeeded/ready after 123.40 seconds. Final ready-screen capture, container-exec smoke and fresh failure/Retry remained NOT RUN/BLOCKED by guest execution timeouts. An app-absent Docker readiness probe also timed out; cause remains unknown. Earlier-head results are not substituted for missing checks.
  • This is Rosetta-emulated AMD64 userspace on Apple Silicon/OrbStack's shared kernel with X11. Native Bluefin/Atomic/Wayland acceptance is NOT RUN. Secured Docker is BLOCKED by missing kernel seccomp; Flatpak and rootless Podman remain NOT RUN on this head.
  • No final-head packaged acceptance is claimed. The guest is stopped with evidence/disks retained. A proposed optional userdb service stop was rejected by automatic approval review and was not performed or retried. No service/security changes or sandbox-bypass qualification occurred.

CodeRabbit's docstring metric was inconclusive (including skipped functions); it is not reported as a passed check or runtime evidence. The separate context scope is tracked in #1651. No blanket comment expansion or test suppression is used to satisfy a metric.

The initial current-head MicroSandbox remote-agent job timed out waiting for a host-Docker preflight container before the product assertions. Its fixture is unchanged from main and does not exercise worker admission. One targeted rerun on unchanged 4592f5c passed, together with the dependent CI aggregate. The original cause remains unknown; no timeout, assertion, selected count, or retry policy was changed. PR CI run 39784432389 and Desktop CI 39784432420 are successful.

📝 Walkthrough

This pull request adds shared workspace ID validation, changes detached-task startup and reconciliation, and updates Desktop job handling for log-persistence errors. It also changes context option loading, Windows process and path handling, test output capture, SSH diagnostics, and CI coverage.

Changes: Workspace ID validation and creation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared ID rules and workspace creation
desktop/src/renderer/src/lib/utils/workspace-id.ts, desktop/src/renderer/src/lib/components/workspace/WorkspaceWizard.svelte, pkg/workspace/workspace.go, cmd/workspace/up/*, desktop/e2e/workspace-id.e2e.ts, e2e/tests/ssh/detached_validation.go, sites/docs-devsy-sh/content/docs/developing-in-workspaces/create-a-workspace.mdx
Shared utilities derive and validate Desktop workspace IDs. CLI validation runs after configuration merging and before preflight. Tests and documentation cover ID rules, source preservation, and startup outcomes.

Detached task lifecycle

Layer / File(s) Summary
Atomic process ownership and platform handling
pkg/command/background.go, pkg/command/launch_*.go, pkg/command/process*.go, cmd/workspace/up/detach.go
Detached launches use launch leases or Windows Job Objects, publish process metadata, and commit after worker readiness. Process exit checks and launch waits are platform-aware.
Task state, storage, and reconciliation
pkg/task/*, pkg/workspace/quiesce.go
Task state records launch protocol and ownership. Store reads use locks, state replacement is atomic, and pending launch cleanup remains retryable. Legacy pending launches are not cleared when cleanup cannot be verified.
Worker finalization and task following
cmd/workspace/up/up.go, cmd/workspace/task.go, cmd/workspace/up/early_task_test.go, cmd/workspace/up/launch_handoff_test.go, cmd/workspace/task_tail_test.go
Worker finalization records failures, releases locks, and joins cleanup errors. Task following reconciles before reading, propagates cancellation, deduplicates diagnostics, and falls back to stored state.

Desktop workspace jobs

Layer / File(s) Summary
Renderer delivery and job completion
desktop/src/main/renderer-events.ts, desktop/src/main/watcher.ts, desktop/src/main/ipc.ts, desktop/src/main/workspace-jobs.ts, desktop/src/shared/workspace-operation.ts, desktop/src/main/__tests__/*
Renderer events use guarded delivery. Workspace jobs record log-persistence errors separately from operation errors and can retry reconciliation.
Workspace status and log-error display
desktop/src/renderer/src/lib/components/workspace/*, desktop/src/renderer/src/lib/stores/workspaces.ts, desktop/src/renderer/src/lib/stores/workspaces.test.ts
Workspace views show log errors, retain unresolved jobs, and expose retry actions when applicable. Tests cover reconciling and failed states.

Context option loading

Layer / File(s) Summary
Context load state
desktop/src/renderer/src/lib/components/context/ContextSheet.svelte, desktop/src/renderer/src/lib/components/context/ContextSheet.test.ts
Option loads reset to defaults and apply results or errors only while their request remains current. Tests cover stale responses, closing and reopening, load failures, and save retries.

Platform and test support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Windows paths, storage, and process tests
pkg/command/job_windows.go, pkg/command/process_windows_test.go, pkg/task/read_*.go, pkg/task/store.go, pkg/task/*_test.go
Windows missing-directory canonicalization uses existing ancestors. Task reads and writes use synchronization and platform-specific file access.
Test capture, SSH diagnostics, and CI
cmd/provider/list_test.go, cmd/secrets/list_test.go, cmd/workspace/helpers_test.go, e2e/tests/ssh/*, hack/ci/suites.yaml, .github/workflows/pr-ci.yml, prek.toml
Large stdout captures use temporary files. SSH diagnostics are redacted and bounded. CI adds explicit workflow permissions and platform-specific test steps.

Possibly related issues

  • devsy-org/devsy#1471 — The changes validate workspace IDs and derive IDs from source paths. They also record launch outcomes, corresponding to the reported uppercase-name workspace creation hang.
Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to dbe74

Creating a workspace now validates IDs first, and interrupted launches are recovered through a handoff protocol that the tests cover. One narrow gap remains. A launch left pending by an older version that crashed mid-launch cannot be cancelled, deleted or quiesced through normal operations, because the code deliberately refuses to guess whether its worker is still running. This should affect few users, but owners should confirm whether they need a manual recovery step for upgrades.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to bbd0e

Validation and recovery improve, but a narrow concurrency gap can report an operation as finished while another attempt is still running. No broader privilege expansion was established.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: The new pre-claim recovery branch holds a separate reconciliation lock rather than the worker lock. After the original worker exits without claiming, another invocation using that task ID can acquire the worker lock while reconciliation still confirms only the original saved identity. Reconciliation can then record abandonment and cleanup completion while the replacement continues. The base declined reconciliation when the worker lock file was absent. Ordinary duplicates with an existing held lock remain rejected, and this interleaving was not demonstrated through normal Desktop submission. Nevertheless, it breaks exclusive ownership before terminalization and can remove live work from active-task tracking.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The traced exposure concerns local task records, supervised worker trees, and their workspace operations. The ownership race requires another invocation with the affected internal task ID; the inspected path does not establish a remote or cross-user authorization bypass.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The identified failure-containment path is a same-task replacement worker overlapping pre-claim reconciliation. A false terminal result is persistent because later success preserves existing terminal state, and terminal tasks are excluded from active-task enumeration. This is an ownership concern, not a verified privilege-escalation finding.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The privileged workspace-up IPC handler retains its trusted-sender check. Changed status and completion paths redact operation data before renderer delivery. The renderer helper sends notifications through the main-owned window and catches delivery failures rather than exposing a new privileged operation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Task failure persistence preserves terminal state and cancellation requests and redacts classified error fields. Worker finalization reports persistence failures instead of silently discarding them. Follower retries rely on persisted state rather than an arbitrary timeout or follower exit as evidence of worker completion.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Use a shared ownership protocol for worker claims and pre-claim reconciliation so exit confirmation cannot terminalize a newly owned task. Preserve worker-claim history separately if lock-file existence must remain recovery evidence.

Explanation

Issue #1471 requires workspace creation to complete for an uppercase local source name. Desktop now derives a valid backend ID without changing the source, rejects invalid explicit IDs before launch, and launches after the valid ID is restored. CLI validation also runs before task allocation. Desktop, CLI, and end-to-end tests cover ID validation, source preservation, and successful task completion.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is complete and directly addresses the change, motivation, linked issues, change types, AI assistance, validation, CI results, limitations, and reviewer notes. It does not reproduce the template's separate Testing and Checklist headings or explicitly state each checklist item, but the required testing and verification details are provided elsewhere. This is sufficient for a pass.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The PR includes a separate ContextSheet product repair and its tests. The repair changes context-option loading, stale responses, load errors, and save behavior. The changes have no demonstrated connection to issue #1471, workspace ID validation, workspace creation, or interrupted launch recovery. The remaining launch, task, Desktop job, process, CI, and documentation changes support the stated workspace objectives.

Resolution

Remove the ContextSheet product change and its tests from this PR, or link that change to a separate active issue. Keep the workspace and launch-recovery changes in this PR.

Summary

This PR aligns workspace IDs across Desktop and the CLI and makes interrupted launches recoverable.

  • Workspace IDs follow the same lowercase rule in Desktop and the CLI.
  • Detached workspace launches confirm worker ownership before work starts.
  • Desktop keeps job results visible when renderer delivery or log saving fails.
  • Context option loads keep edits and ignore responses for an old context.
  • SSH proxy failures include bounded, redacted diagnostics.
  • CI adds lifecycle coverage and test helpers handle large output.

🟡 Minor · Pass the returned flush error to workspaceJobs.finish in… · ipc.ts:2394-2399

desktop/src/main/ipc.ts:2394-2399
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Pass the returned flush error to workspaceJobs.finish in startWorkspaceAction.

This PR changes createLogSink.done (Line 330-344). The method no longer rejects when a flush fails. It now catches the flush failure and returns it as a string. runWorkspaceUp and reconcileDetachedTask forward that string to workspaceJobs.finish as confirmationError.

startWorkspaceAction does not forward it. The .catch(...) on Line 2396 can no longer run. The returned flushError is discarded. workspaceJobs.finish(args.workspaceId, generation) then reports a clean success.

The failure path (Line 2405-2417) has the same gap. As a result, stop, delete, rebuild and reset never show "Workspace log could not be saved", but workspace-up does. The only trace of the failure is a mainLog.warn line.

Proposed fix
- await sink
- .done(formatLogLine("Completed"), { success: true })
-          .catch((error) =>
- mainLog.warn("[workspace-operation] log flush failed", error),
- )
- await workspaceJobs.finish(args.workspaceId, generation)
+        const flushError = await sink.done(formatLogLine("Completed"), {
+ success: true,
+ })
+ await workspaceJobs.finish(
+ args.workspaceId,
+ generation,
+ undefined,
+ flushError,
+ )

Apply the same change in the catch block:

- if (sink)
- await sink
-            .done(formatLogLine(cliError.message, "ERROR"), {
- success: false,
- level: "error",
- cliError,
- })
-            .catch(() => {})
- await workspaceJobs.finish(
- args.workspaceId,
- generation,
- cliError.message,
- )
+ const flushError = sink
+          ? await sink.done(formatLogLine(cliError.message, "ERROR"), {
+ success: false,
+ level: "error",
+ cliError,
+ })
+ : undefined
+ await workspaceJobs.finish(
+ args.workspaceId,
+ generation,
+ cliError.message,
+ flushError,
+ )

Serialize task reads across Windows atomic replacement and observe unreaped worker exit without weakening identity checks. Update the detached fixture to use the production handoff, preserve trailing-source basename suggestions, and prevent test capture pipe deadlocks.

Keep log persistence errors separate from status refresh failures, retain an explicit unconfirmed state, and allow a new operation generation to retry. Add a real-process safety test showing why an exited legacy reference cannot authorize cleanup of an unpublished later attempt.
