Summary

Fixes the five issues filed from the 2026-10-18 orca vs dsh benchmark: DeepSeek cost estimates now use the current official prices with peak/off-peak rates and refresh from models.dev (#136), the fixed per-request prefix is about 24% smaller (#137), git_status is no longer advertised outside a git repository (#138), tool.call.requested reports the real action and target (#139), and orca exec JSONL no longer emits one event per streamed token (#140).

Design and plan for #136: docs/superpowers/specs/2026-10-19-dynamic-pricing-design.md, docs/superpowers/plans/2026-10-19-dynamic-pricing.md (deviations during execution are listed in its 执行中的调整 section).

Changes

#136 dynamic pricing

  • Built-in table updated to DeepSeek's published off-peak prices (flash 0.15 / 0.003 / 0.6, pro 0.66 / 0.022 / 1.98 USD per 1M miss/hit/output). Peak hours (Beijing Mon–Fri 09–12 and 14–18, excluding Chinese public holidays) double the price; weekends and holidays are off-peak.
  • crates/orca-runtime/src/pricing/: rates (table, time-of-use rule, holidays), book (process-wide price book, $ORCA_HOME/pricing-cache.json v2 with per-model content dates), refresh (background fetch of https://models.dev/api.json with gzip, ETag, 15 s timeout, 32 MiB cap; dev builds skip it unless ORCA_PRICING_URL is set).
  • Built-in prices win unless a cached entry's models.dev last_updated is on or after the built-in date; fetched prices outside a plausible range are dropped.
  • Config: [models."<name>".pricing] fixed prices (all hours), [pricing] refresh = false; both are user-config only — the project layer strips them, and an invalid project config now falls back to the user config instead of all defaults.
  • CostTracker prices each usage at the current book and time; user overrides apply to every tracker (root sessions, child agents, detached workers, suspended/background accounting).
  • orca doctor reports the price source, the refresh switch, and the current tier.
  • Docs: README (en, zh-CN), site models and configuration pages (en, zh), release checklist (check built-in prices; add next year's holidays each November).

#137 per-request prefix

  • b620135f drops the system prompt's duplicated tool listing, and stops advertising tools that cannot work in the session: workflow IPC tools outside workflow children, MCP resource tools without MCP servers, ask_user_question in headless orca exec.
  • Real-API A/B on a small bug-fix task: first request 10,517 → 8,094 prompt tokens.
  • 920c6231 keeps that from moving a slow first macOS NSProcessInfo probe into turn setup: computer-use visibility checks session policy before probing the host.

#138 git_status outside a repository

  • 4c535a55, 48cf184d: a validated, memoized, process-free work-tree check per cwd; outside a repository git_status is not advertised and the prompt says Git repository: no. Repository prompts are byte-identical to before.

#139 tool action in events

  • 8010e5b0, e43b0b3b: tool.call.requested carries the registry-derived action and target (MCP and external tools included) in exec JSONL and in server mode.

#140 JSONL size

  • ab1dfe08: orca exec --output-format jsonl merges consecutive reasoning/message deltas of the same item (≈1 s / 64 KiB limits, flush before any other event and on finish). Concatenated text is unchanged; seq may skip values (documented). Observers, history, TUI, ACP and server mode still receive every delta.

Verification

Local (macOS), on the merged state:

  • cargo fmt --check, all CI node validators, cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets --locked (no new warnings).
  • cargo nextest run --workspace --all-targets --profile ci: 4439/4440 before the merge from main; the remaining failure, orca-computer-use … esc_tap::tests::stopping_the_listener_does_not_wait_for_blocked_stdout, fails the same way on main on a cold first run.
  • cargo nextest run -p orca-tui --lib --profile ci-serial: 1818/1818; tui_pty_contract: 36/36; site build OK.
  • Real network: refresh from models.dev wrote a v2 cache with an ETag; a stale cache revalidated with If-None-Match; orca doctor reported the source.

Notes for the next release

  • Estimates rise: output prices more than doubled and peak hours double them again, so max_cost_usd budgets stop earlier.
  • Orca contacts https://models.dev/api.json in the background when its cached prices are missing or a day old; [pricing] refresh = false turns that off.
  • Known gaps left for later: release-mode tests with a custom --target-dir can reach models.dev; the typed surface still classifies MCP/external tool actions without the MCP registry; read_mcp_resource / Workflow / read_skill have no event target; the custom-agent catalog is rescanned each turn.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added DeepSeek-based cost estimates with peak/off-peak pricing, cached refresh, and custom per-model rates.
    • Added pricing refresh controls and pricing diagnostics through orca doctor.
    • JSONL output may combine consecutive updates while preserving text; completed responses include full content.
    • Tool-call events now report consistent actions and targets, including external and MCP tools.
    • Added headless execution support for subagents.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved tool visibility based on workflow context, headless mode, and Git repository availability.
  • Documentation
    • Updated configuration, pricing, JSONL output, and release guidance.

Share a memoized Git workspace decision across system prompts and provider tool advertising, including each child agent working directory.

Refs #138
Remove duplicated tool descriptions from system prompts and omit workflow
IPC, MCP resource, and question schemas when their session context is absent.
Carry headless advertisement state into detached workers without changing
continuation or delegation identities. Keep skill tools advertised until a
session-owned catalog can supply a stable availability snapshot.

Refs #137
Project the committed surface action using exec's ActionKind serialization. Add a provider-shaped server turn regression for write_file metadata.

Refs #139
Require a HEAD file in .git directories and existing directory targets for gitfiles and GIT_DIR. Preserve ancestor fallback, fixture ceilings, and the memoized cwd decision; update repository fixtures and cover valid and invalid markers.

Refs #138
Share user price overrides across tracker snapshots and centralize the lib-test pricing clock. Cover session setup and background accounting, and align the design notes.

Refs #136
Check session policy before querying native computer-use host support. The
first macOS NSProcessInfo version query can block in Foundation bundle
directory enumeration even when computer_use.interactive is false.

Removing the redundant prompt-time visibility check in b620135 moved that
initialization after TurnStarted. Background transfer then waited for turn
setup to reach provider suspension and exceeded the unchanged 2s deadline.
A native stack sample identified the version query; restoring only the early
probe took 6.09s but made the original handoff test pass.

Preserve the complete visibility predicate and #137's prompt/schema trimming.
Keep the existing regression test and timeouts unchanged.

Validation:
- Original handoff regression: 5 consecutive passes (0.606-0.641s).
- TUI lib, ci-serial: 1818 passed, 24 skipped, no retries.
- Runtime lib, serial: 1940 passed, 9 ignored.
- Clippy, runtime/TUI all targets: exit 0; same 645 warning diagnostics as HEAD.
- cargo fmt --all -- --check: passed.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 5 (Critical) | ~120 minutes

Change: Feature · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 6a56a

The PR is mergeable with owner awareness that 2027 holiday dates must be added through the release process; otherwise, some future cost estimates may be too high and stop budgeted runs early.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to eb078

The change adds reliance on remotely supplied prices and changes streamed output, but the inspected paths preserve user-owned settings and execution-time permission checks. Cost limits remain based on estimates, not guaranteed billed amounts. No new authorization bypass was established; incomplete coverage prevents a minimal-risk assessment.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Control of an accepted pricing response can influence subsequent estimated costs for non-overridden models across sessions sharing the process-wide book, and through the persisted cache on later starts. This affects cost-based stopping behavior; the inspected data path does not itself grant tool-execution authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The reviewed cost path does not establish a guaranteed billed-spend ceiling. Accepted remote rates may understate actual prices despite plausibility checks, but estimated-cost accounting already existed at the base. The new external accuracy dependency is a design limitation, not evidence that repository-controlled input can bypass the user-owned pricing boundary.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Tool advertisement remains distinct from execution authority. Child requests are checked against inherited allowed-tool policy before dispatch, computer requests recheck visibility at execution, and workflow IPC requires workflow-child context. MCP resource calls use the active registry rather than acquiring capabilities merely because a tool was advertised.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The refresh design contains partial-failure effects through atomic publication and retention of prior prices, but long-lived processes can retain stale pricing because there is no in-process recheck or retry. This follows the documented policy and should not be interpreted as continuous daily synchronization or authoritative billing enforcement.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — If cost limits are intended to provide stronger financial containment than estimated-cost stopping, separate refreshable display estimates from explicitly approved or conservatively pinned enforcement rates, and document the remaining provider-billing uncertainty.

Add a current-year coverage test for WEEKDAY_HOLIDAYS.

When a weekday holiday is absent from the table, is_peak can return true during peak hours. Built-in DeepSeek pricing then applies the 2.0 multiplier through CostTracker::estimate. A configured cost budget can stop the run after the inflated estimate is recorded. The existing test checks only valid weekdays and the table length.

The design spec documents holiday-table lag until the next release. The release process already instructs maintainers to add the next year's holidays, so no additional release-process note is needed.

  • lifecycle.rs shell task metadata: fixed in abe7654 — requested and completed events decide with the canonical action, so DeepSeek bash calls (placeholder action read) now carry the shell task snapshot. Covered by a unit test and the DeepSeek-path contract test.
  • tool_invocation.rs MCP resource tools: fixed in 168d325 — advertised only when at least one MCP server is enabled (root and child agents).
  • tests/doctor_cli_contract.rs hardcoded date: fixed in 6a56a52 — doctor and pricing contract fixtures derive their dates from builtin_as_of().
  • rates.rs current-year holiday test: not adopted. A test keyed to the wall-clock year would turn CI red for every PR each January until the table is updated; the yearly holiday update is on the release checklist instead (docs/release-process.md), and a missing year only overestimates (holiday hours priced as peak).
