fix(agent): verbatim file reads, no LLM summary; clearer juice tool guidance - #6967
Conversation
Update the pinned commit for the vendor/tinyjuice submodule to aec5e8403b, advancing from the previous commit cb15efa6b0. This brings in the latest changes from the upstream dependency. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Update the pinned commit for the vendor/tinyjuice subproject to incorporate upstream changes. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The tool output file read middleware was not being properly registered in the middleware chain, causing file read operations to fail silently. This change adds the missing middleware registration and includes corresponding tests to verify the file read functionality works correctly. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
When a tool call returns an empty content string, the middleware now correctly preserves the empty output instead of treating it as missing. This fixes a bug where tool outputs with no content were incorrectly filtered out, causing downstream processing to fail when expecting a response. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The `ToolOutputMiddleware` struct gained a `file_reads` field, but several test helper functions that construct the middleware were not updated, causing compilation failures. This change adds the missing field to all test constructors and fixes an indentation issue in the production code. Additionally, the description of the `TokenjuiceRetrieveTool` is updated to clarify that the token can come from either a footer or a marker, and to recommend using `juice_find` for partial reads. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Changed the description of the TokenjuiceRetrieveTool to clarify that `juice_find` should be used with the same `handle` value only when that tool is offered, rather than suggesting it as a general alternative for partial reads or searches. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The test now expects the middleware to return a specific error variant instead of a generic failure, aligning with the recent change that introduced more precise error handling in the middleware layer. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The test module declarations in middleware_tests.rs were reordered so that tool_output_file_read_tests appears before tool_output_tests, matching the new file structure. Additionally, formatting was improved in tool_output_file_read.rs and its tests by adding braces around the continue statement and wrapping long assertion lines for better readability. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The round-trip test now verifies that the slice-read tool appears before the whole-original retrieve tool in the model preview, ensuring the prompt orders tools as intended. The assertion was narrowed to only check the two tools whose relative order matters, leaving the extract tool to its description. Add the missing import of `tool_result_artifacts_dir` from the security policy module to the artifact wiring tests, resolving a compilation error in the test file. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>

Suggested reviewers: Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to The change is mostly safe. Small gaps in file-read detection could skip summaries for some non-file output, and the footer guidance depends on a TinyJuice release that is not yet pinned. Resolve these before shipping the footer wording. Security Architecture ReviewSecurity architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to The change affects how permitted file contents are presented, rather than granting additional access. Existing size limits and credential-redaction wiring remain in place. Risk is low, but failure-path behavior and the updated dependency could not be fully verified. The middleware tests were updated to reflect the new artifact storage layout where persisted tool outputs are nested under a `tool-results` directory. The CI module-pin exemptions file also gains an entry for the tinyjuice module, which carries footer guidance changes ahead of its next release tag. Rejoin two multi-line `std::fs::read_to_string` calls into single lines in the oversized-result and raw-file-read tests, aligning them with the project's prevailing style without altering any test behaviour. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Use `workspace.join("artifacts")` instead of the policy function to set the artifact directory, ensuring the test uses a predictable path that matches the actual runtime layout.

The verbatim file read check now treats a budget of zero as unlimited, so file reads are left verbatim when no compaction budget is configured. The file read command detection also now rejects any command containing a dollar sign, catching variable expansions that could expose non-file content, and recognizes `--in-place=` with an argument as an in-place sed edit. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Update the embedded module record for tinyjuice from version 0.5.2 to 0.6.0, including the new release URL, archive filenames, and SHA-256 checksums for all supported platforms. The vendor submodule pointer is also advanced to the corresponding commit. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The tinyjuice module pin has been reconciled with its released tag, so the exemption entry is no longer needed. The remaining exemption for tinycomputer is kept as its pin still carries an unreleased dependency bump. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>

Summary
file_read, or a shell command made only ofcdpluscat/head/tail/nl/sedwithout-i, with no redirects or substitutions) no longer gets a TinyJuice LLM payload summary. Within the per-result budget (16 KiB) it goes in verbatim. Past the budget it gets TinyJuice's deterministic handle and preview, then the normal byte bound.juice_retrieve's description no longer refers to a⟦tj:…⟧marker no footer shows. It now says to pass the footer's token, and to usejuice_findwith the same value ashandlefor part of an output.vendor/tinyjuiceto tinyjuice#55: recovery footers name ajuice_findslice read beforejuice_retrieve, and the REPL tool descriptions are clearer.Problem
On DeepSWE runs (anko task, DeepSeek V4 Flash), 32 of the 33 tool outputs TinyJuice compressed were whole source files the agent was about to edit (
cat vm/vmExprFunction.go,cat -n parser/lexer.go, ...).juice_retrievefor the whole file, or re-read it withsed -n, every time.juice_retrieve, and the agent took it 2 of 3 times. After the handle stub, which names the REPL tools, it re-read withsed -n4 of 4 times and never used a juice tool.Solution
middleware/tool_output_file_read.rs):is_file_read_callfollowsuse_skillinto the wrapped tool and is deliberately narrow. Builds, tests, grep, git diff, redirects, heredocs,$(…)andsed -iall keep the normal pipeline, since their output isn't a file on disk.ToolOutputMiddleware):before_toolrecords file-read call ids infile_reads, the same seam asraw_fetches.after_tool): within the budget the result skips TinyJuice entirely. Above it, no summary ticket is registered, so TinyJuice compacts deterministically.bench-6955-juice-on-demand, stacked on tinyjuice#55) makes TinyJuice's LLM summary on-demand only for all outputs. After that, this PR's lasting effect is "file reads within budget stay verbatim".Measured
anko-default-function-arguments, OpenHuman with the S4 compaction stack (#6963), default trigger (no compaction in either run), DeepSeek V4 Flash, offline bench. The locally built TinyJuice module was loaded through
TINYJUICE_TEST_MODULE.vmExprFunction.go→juice_retrieveof the whole fileOne run each of a nondeterministic model: the resolved/failed difference is not attributed to this change. That run exercised no recovery footer, so the footer change (tinyjuice#55) is covered by its unit tests here, not by a live run.
