Why

Preserve and develop the 2026-09-24 synthesis connecting personal continuity, embodiment, adaptation, trauma/path dependence, agency, emergence, intelligence, AI, institutions, and coherence without leaving the ideas fragmented across chat or prematurely turning them into doctrine.

The recurring question is:

How can a person, community, institution, intelligence, or technical system change enough to adapt while preserving or rebuilding the capacities, relationships, and meaningful possibilities that make continued becoming possible — and who gets to shape that possibility space?

What this PR adds

Cross-project concept

Adds concepts/dynamic-coherence.md with:

  • adaptive continuity and dynamic coherence;
  • state vs. transition-dynamics distinction;
  • history/path dependence as changes in what becomes possible next;
  • provisional agency envelope and meta-agency language;
  • bounded use of attractor-like patterns and metastability;
  • trauma as a carefully scoped example rather than a universal metaphor;
  • embodied continuity and personal-identity implications;
  • resilience, emergence/downward constraint, reflexivity, and self-fulfilling models;
  • AI/intelligence implications with an explicit separation between functional adaptation and subjective experience;
  • concept map, quick vocabulary, candidate principles, failure modes, project translations, simulation implications, research anchors, and open questions.

Systems model

Adds systems/adaptation/model.md to operationalize:

  • state change vs. adaptive change;
  • compensation, learning, accommodation, structural adaptation, transformation, harmful optimization, and capture/entrenchment;
  • trigger → signal → interpretation → response → consequence → learning;
  • path dependence, feedback quality, timescale, power, future possibility effects, recovery, resilience, identity, and reflexive adaptation;
  • evidence labels, cross-domain transfer tests, and a compact adaptation canvas.

Coherence model

Expands systems/coherence/model.md beyond static assumption/reality fit to include:

  • feedback and revisability;
  • change across time and scale;
  • externalized costs and power;
  • agency effects;
  • path dependence;
  • false coherence;
  • the distinction between dynamic coherence and maximum order/stability/optimization.

Routing and ecosystem map

Adds Idea Trail 17 — Adaptive Continuity, Agency, and Becoming and maps it to existing work in:

  • Conscious Systems;
  • Being Human(e);
  • Coherent Computing;
  • Community Infrastructure;
  • Liberated Intelligence;
  • Coherent World simulation;
  • Root Sequence systems/emergence.

Also updates the concept/system indexes and Root Sequence Design Grammar.

Evidence boundary / anti-slop guardrails

This PR deliberately does not claim one universal mechanism across organisms, minds, AI systems, institutions, ecosystems, or technical systems.

  • allostasis, enactivism/embodiment, dynamical-systems work, metastability, and ecological resilience are used as intellectual anchors for specific concepts, not proof of the whole synthesis;
  • attractor and metastability stay qualified unless a domain-specific formal model warrants the technical term;
  • trauma is not reduced to “stress + fear,” and abstract systems language is not a clinical diagnosis;
  • history-dependent AI behavior is not treated as evidence of AI suffering, consciousness, or trauma;
  • resilience and adaptation are not treated as normative goods;
  • “more possibilities” is not automatically treated as “more freedom” or better design;
  • the framework includes explicit failure tests for concept inflation, teleology, individualizing structural problems, and turning “coherence” into a universal approval word.

I did not add another Conscious Systems conceptual matrix or promote new consciousness claims. That research area already records that conceptual growth has outpaced methods verification; this PR only routes to its existing questions.

Validation performed

  • branch is based directly on current main at the time of creation;
  • Idea Trail graph: 17 trails / 82 mapped documents;
  • generated IDEA_TRAIL_INDEX.md exactly matches the updated graph;
  • no unknown trail references;
  • no duplicate document mappings;
  • Trail 17 has 11 high-signal mapped artifacts across the ecosystem.

Author-review questions

  1. Does dynamic coherence add useful precision beyond existing coherence/adaptation language, or should it be renamed/narrowed?
  2. Are agency envelope and meta-agency useful working terms, or do established literatures already offer better language?
  3. Does the expanded coherence model preserve the distinction between descriptive systems analysis and normative judgment?
  4. Is Trail 17 appropriately scoped, or is it trying to connect too much too soon?
  5. Which bounded cases should be used first to stress-test the framework?
  6. Which project should receive the first local translation after this shared layer is reviewed?

Follow-up intentionally left out of this PR

  • systematic related-work comparison with viability theory, control/cybernetic approaches, enactivism, ecological resilience, and complex adaptive systems;
  • bounded case tests that can falsify or narrow the proposed vocabulary;
  • operationalizing history-dependent possibility space in the Coherent World simulation;
  • project-local changes in Coherent Computing, Community Infrastructure, Being Human(e), Liberated Intelligence, and Coherent World;
  • any attempt to turn this into a scalar coherence or agency score.

The goal of this PR is to preserve the insight, give it a coherent home, expose its assumptions, and make it testable enough to disagree with before expanding it further.

Cross-project translation map — 2026-09-24

This shared draft now has bounded local translations rather than copied doctrine:

  • Coherent World: Root-Sequence/coherent-world#15 — path-dependent simulation, agency envelopes, meta-agency, adaptive traps, acceptance cases; simulation CI passed.
  • UCF: Reconcile dynamic coherence with evidence and existing methods universal-coherence-framework#6 — targeted evidence reconciliation, v1.1 temporal extension, correction/audit notices for older overclaims.
  • Coherent Computing: Root-Sequence/coherent-computing#8 — future-capability requirement/scenario/test; immediate adaptation success vs. later lock-in/recovery/migration.
  • Community Infrastructure: Root-Sequence/community-infrastructure#27 — contextual integration as present capability plus future dependency/replaceability.
  • Being Human(e): Root-Sequence/beinghumane-atlas#10 — history and later possibility, non-restorative recovery, substantive opportunity; clinical/structural guardrails retained.
  • Liberated Intelligence: Extend reflective accountability across adaptive change liberated-intelligence#4 — accountable rule-level revision vs. mere belief-state change; explicit no-consciousness inference.

Evidence/method status

The UCF pass checked enactive adaptivity, allostasis, ecological resilience/adaptability/transformability, metastability, dynamical personality/attractors, the capability approach, viability theory, and information-theoretic empowerment.

Current conclusion: serious adjacent literatures support many components, but not one universal dynamic-coherence mechanism. The strongest candidate contribution is integrative: keeping present fit, path dependence, future reachable possibility, feedback, power over revision, continuity criteria, and externalized costs visible together.

The Coherent Systems related-work note on this branch now routes that insight into the already-planned T-003 added-value comparison instead of creating a separate validation program.

No project-local PR should merge merely because this central PR exists; each retains its own review authority.

Evidence/method follow-through has started rather than treating the synthesis as self-validating.

Related draft work:

The living paper's related-work note on this branch now explicitly compares the framework against those existing concepts and keeps STPA / competent ordinary review as baselines for a future added-value test.

This does not make the draft canonical or validated; it records where the idea is being tested and where project-local translations live.

T-003 method gate added

The living-paper branch now contains and routes to research/papers/coherent-systems/notes/t003-added-value-protocol.md.

The protocol is explicitly UNRUN and pre-specifies:

  • competent ordinary review / STPA (when appropriate) / capability-oriented comparator roles;
  • one frozen 13-question dynamic-coherence prompt;
  • finding-level evidence, decision-relevance and novelty coding;
  • false-alarm, burden, privacy and unnecessary-information measures;
  • editorial-pilot vs independent-review boundaries;
  • null-result and framework-retirement signals.

open-questions.md now states that the next legitimate T-003 step is case selection and evidence-packet freezing, not another conceptual expansion.

I have deliberately not selected a convenient "obvious lock-in" case in this pass, because choosing a case whose known conclusion already fits the new framework would bias the added-value test.

T-003 Editorial Pilot 001 result: near-null

Pilot 001 is now frozen and coded.

Case: Cloudflare June 20, 2024 incident.
Methods: competent ordinary incident/system review (A) vs frozen dynamic-coherence review (D), same evidence packet, same AI-assisted process.

Result

  • Method D: 0 findings coded simultaneously E1–E2 / D2 / N2 (evidence-supported, decision-relevant, and substantively absent from Method A).
  • Method A: 1 such finding relative to D — explicit execution-time/watchdog containment for non-terminating request handling. This action was source-reported in the packet, so it is not a discovery claim.
  • Dynamic finding D-04 ("recovery-option contraction") was useful synthesis across several ordinary findings, but did not create a clearly new action.
  • No clear E0 false alarms were coded, but same-model generation/coding makes that weak evidence.

Current interpretation

Dynamic coherence may be a useful integrative/routing language, but Pilot 001 gives no basis to call it a superior or uniquely productive incident-review method.

Protocol defects exposed

  1. Packet included source remediation conclusions, making discovery too easy.
  2. Ordinary systems review already captures much of dependencies/propagation/recovery.
  3. Case did not exercise human agency-envelope questions.
  4. STPA was not included.
  5. Same AI generated/coded everything.
  6. Human burden remains unmeasured.

Full record:

  • notes/t003-editorial-pilot-001-registration.md
  • notes/t003-editorial-pilot-001-method-a.md
  • notes/t003-editorial-pilot-001-method-d.md
  • notes/t003-editorial-pilot-001-comparison.md

Next proposed editorial step: Pilot 002 on the same incident using an explicitly artificial packet that withholds the postmortem's remediation section, testing whether each method can derive changes rather than echo them. This remains editorial method debugging, not validation.

Reading Trails / Brain Food layer added

The research source trail is now preserved separately from claim-level evidence:

  • research/reading-trails/README.md — convention and purpose
  • research/reading-trails/systems-cybernetics-complexity.md — first curated trail

The first trail includes The Systems Thinker, W. Ross Ashby Digital Archive, American Society for Cybernetics, ISSS + its old Primer, Resilience Engineering Association, System Dynamics Society, Complexity Explorer, Systemic Design Association/RSD, Werner Ulrich/CSH, Metaphorum, Panarchy, and suggested rabbit-hole routes.

This is intentionally a discovery artifact, not an evidence-status shortcut. A site can be wonderful brain food without being the source that supports a consequential claim.

Epistemic Discoverability / Knowledge Routing added to RS

New canonical concept:

  • concepts/epistemic-discoverability.md

New Reading Trail:

  • research/reading-trails/information-discovery-sensemaking.md

The concept is grounded against prior work rather than treated as a new coinage:

  • Furnas et al. — Vocabulary Problem;
  • Bates — berrypicking / evolving search;
  • Pirolli & Card — information foraging / information scent;
  • Russell et al. — sensemaking;
  • epistemic-agency research in learning sciences / education.

The Root Sequence claim is narrower:

design knowledge environments so someone can move from the concepts/questions they currently have toward relevant terminology, fields, sources, methods, and communities they do not yet know how to name.

It is now linked from:

  • concepts/README.md
  • concepts/root-sequence.md
  • concepts/legible-systems.md
  • concepts/design-grammar.md
  • Reading Trails index

A future Conceptual Router is recorded as a candidate artifact, but explicitly not approved for implementation until the lightweight Reading Trails/routing practice has enough real use to justify it.

Next-phase work completed: method → router → Case 2

Canonical method

Added:

  • research/method.md — Root Sequence Research Method
  • research/method-router.md — question-shape → native-method router

The method now explicitly includes:

  • preserve raw intuition;
  • decompose concepts;
  • route to native disciplines;
  • classify claim type;
  • restore cross-domain differences;
  • boundary/power analysis;
  • competent baseline comparison;
  • preregistration;
  • adversarial cases;
  • KEEP / NARROW / SPLIT / ROUTE / RENAME / ARCHIVE / RETIRE outcomes;
  • local translation;
  • visible revision;
  • AI-conflict disclosure;
  • a contamination rule: a withheld packet is not blinded if the analyst already saw the withheld source material.

T-003 Case 2

Selected and froze the UK National Digital Support Service evaluation as an agency/access/boundary-heavy case.

Compared:
A. service/accessibility review
B. capability-oriented analysis
C. simplified Critical Systems Heuristics
D. Root Sequence routing/adaptive-continuity synthesis

Pilot 003 result

Again, RS produced no clearly unique evidence-supported decision-relevant native mechanism beyond the competent native methods.

What it did add:

  • explicit cross-method relationships;
  • referral architecture ↔ observed demand/evidence;
  • support-layer compensation as a cross-boundary research question;
  • burden-shifting/adaptation connections;
  • continuity/path-dependence framing.

The result further supports:

Root Sequence as a transdisciplinary method router + synthesis layer, not a universal replacement method.

Pilot 003 also exposed two router gaps now added:

  • service/inclusive-service/digital-inclusion methods;
  • participatory/co-design/lived-expertise methods.

open-questions.md now records that the next meaningful T-003 gate is independent human/domain review, not a fourth same-model case.
