Walkthrough

The change adds device and server Pub/Sub client packages that declare their traffic through Ably-Agent. It also updates agent merging and changes the SDK identifier prefix. Tests check device and server request headers.

Changes

Pub/Sub client classification

Layer / File(s) Summary
Agent option and SDK identifier updates
ably/options.go, ably/proto_http.go
WithAgents now preserves existing entries and overwrites duplicate keys. The SDK identifier now uses the ably-pubsub-go/ prefix.
Device client constructor and validation
pubsub/device/device.go, pubsub/device/device_test.go
The new device package creates realtime clients with the device agent. The test checks the recorded Ably-Agent header.
Server client constructors and validation
pubsub/server/server.go, pubsub/server/server_test.go
The new server package adds REST and realtime client aliases and constructors. The tests check the server agent and merged user agents.

Introduce per-side pubsub packages, so applications declare whether
they are running on an end-user device or a server by their choice of
package, shippable in a minor release:

- pubsub/device: NewClient, returning a Client (= ably.Realtime)
- pubsub/server: NewHTTPClient and NewRealtimeClient, returning an
  HTTPClient (= ably.REST) and a RealtimeClient (= ably.Realtime)

The constructors return type aliases of today's clients rather than
wrapper types: the side is the package and constructor choice plus the
agent declaration, not a type distinction. Each constructor appends a
side-declaring agent (ably-go-pubsub-device / ably-go-pubsub-server) to
the Ably-Agent header, which is what monthly-active-user classification
keys on.

WithAgents now merges its entries into any agents already configured
instead of replacing them, so the side agent appended by the
constructors and a user-supplied WithAgents coexist regardless of
option order.

…ached (RTS4c-e)

Spec 6.3.0 replaces RTS4a with RTS4c-e. Release previously detached the
channel and removed it once the detach completed, so a Get for the same
name in that window returned the channel that was about to be removed,
which then received no further messages. It also failed to release a
FAILED channel, since detaching one is an error (RTL5b).

Release now removes a channel in the INITIALIZED, DETACHED or FAILED
state immediately, and for any other state returns an ErrorInfo with
code 90011 and statusCode 400 without changing the channel or the
collection. As it no longer blocks, it no longer takes a context.

This is a breaking change: callers must call RealtimeChannel.Detach and
wait for it to return before calling Channels.Release(name).

ErrChannelReleaseInvalidState is added by hand to error_names.go. 90011
is registered in ably-common, but the common pin is not bumped: the
errors.go generator cannot parse the current errors.json format.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The stateless client and the types reachable from it were named after
the Ably REST API they talk to rather than the transport they use,
which reads inconsistently beside Realtime and beside the already
HTTP-named pubsub/server aliases.

Rename REST -> HTTPClient, RESTChannels -> HTTPChannels, RESTChannel ->
HTTPChannel, RESTPresence -> HTTPPresence, RESTRequest -> HTTPRequest,
RESTPaginatedItems -> HTTPPaginatedItems, NewREST -> NewHTTPClient,
WithRESTHost -> WithHTTPHost and WithIdempotentRESTPublishing ->
WithIdempotentHTTPPublishing.

This is a breaking change: the old names are removed outright rather
than kept as deprecated aliases, so a /v2 module path is required
before release. Stats.REST keeps its name, because it mirrors the
"rest" field of the stats payload rather than naming a client type.

 - Extend pubsub/server with aliases for the types reachable through
   HTTPClient, so its users never name an ably.* type directly

 - Unexport ablytest's stdlib *http.Client helper, freeing the
   NewHTTPClient name for the sandbox helper that was ablytest.NewREST

 - Document the old-to-new mapping in UPDATING.md

Tests and examples follow the new names. No behaviour changes, so no
new coverage is added.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The SDK was entered through github.com/ably/ably-go/ably, which left the
pubsub packages as a thin veneer over an API users could equally import
directly, and gave them no way to see which half of it applied to them.

Move the implementation to internal/ably, where nothing outside this
module can import it, and have pubsub/server and pubsub/device re-export
the part of it their users need. The re-exports are type aliases, so the
types stay identical across both packages.

Generate the re-exports rather than listing them, since a hand-written
mirror of ~200 declarations drifts the first time internal/ably changes.
internal/cmd/genapi aliases every exported type by default — an
incomplete walk of the API can then only over-expose, never silently
drop — and emits a function or constant once every ably type in its
signature is aliased too. pubsub/device additionally drops what only an
HTTPClient can reach, which a device client has no way to obtain.

Three consequences worth knowing, all recorded in UPDATING.md:

 - LiveObjects types take an Objects prefix, because objects.Message and
   ably.Message cannot share a package

 - WithDial is not re-exported: its signature names an unexported type,
   so no external caller could ever supply an argument to it

 - internal/ably/http_{client,channel,presence}.go are the former rest_*
   files, renamed to match the types they hold

api_test.go in each package exercises a broad slice of the re-exported
surface, so a symbol dropped from the generated set fails here rather
than in a user's build. genapi_test.go fails when the generated files
no longer match the generator, alongside the existing ci-generate.sh
check that go generate leaves a clean tree.

Examples now use pubsub/server, and examples/rest is examples/http.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The pubsub directory added a path segment that said nothing the module
path did not already say, and the SDK is no longer an ably-go: after the
previous commit it exposes only the Pub/Sub entry points.

Rename the module to github.com/ably/ably-pubsub-go and lift the two
entry-point packages to the repository root, so that they are imported
as .../ably-pubsub-go/server and .../ably-pubsub-go/device. The module
rename stands in for the /v2 path suffix this release would otherwise
need, so there is no ably-go/v2.

genapi needed more than a path rewrite: its repoRoot walked up looking
for the literal old module line in go.mod, so `go generate` failed until
it was pointed at the new path. Both that lookup and its error message
now come from one modulePath constant.

The repository has not moved yet, so github.com/ably/ably-go URLs are
left alone and the README says the new path does not resolve until it
does.

server and device named the package after its directory, so the same
call read as server.NewRealtimeClient in one and device.NewClient in the
other. Which side an application runs on is already settled by the
import path it chose; repeating it on every call added nothing.

Name both packages pubsub. Only the import path now distinguishes them,
and moving an application between the two is a one-line change to that
path rather than a rewrite of every call site. Note that a bare import
of either path binds pubsub, not server or device, since the identifier
comes from the package clause and not the last path element; the package
docs and the migration guide both say so, and no import aliases the name
back to its directory.

The previous commit named both entry-point packages pubsub while leaving
them in server and device, so the identifier an import bound differed
from the last element of its path. Go tooling and readers expect the two
to match, and the docs had to warn about it.

Move the packages one level down, to .../server/pubsub and
.../device/pubsub. The server or device segment still says which side
the code runs on, and the package name now follows the path. The genapi
targets, go generate hints, examples and docs follow the new paths, and
the warning about the mismatch is gone.

Actionable Review — integration/v2 → main (ably/ably-go PR #712)

PR #712 — "Integration branch for v2 packages"
Compared origin/main @ b3040fe ... integration/v2 @ 19864dab (current PR head).
Head update The review was first run on 8755534. The rebase rewrote commit SHAs (e1097c0→97a790b, ec6fee7→428a794, fd0f5de→9450ab9, 0ca30d6→3ee385b, 3628249→19864da); this report uses the new SHAs. The branch was then rebased, adding 34f5bd5 ("make Channels.Release return an error unless the channel is detached") and an UPDATING.md clean-up. Every finding below has been re-checked on 19864dab. Only UPDATING.md, realtime_channel.go, state.go, error_names.go and two channel tests differ between the two heads.
PR description claims "packages split, renaming and deletion of deprecated methods"
Reference ably-java origin/integration/v2 (14 commits, 518819db … ba473268)
Review date 2026-10-20. A second validation pass re-checked every file:line, quote, count and snippet; corrections and newly found items (M11, m11–m14, Q5) are applied.

Verdict

Not ready to merge. The build is healthy (§1). The problems are in what the
PR is about to commit Ably to on a new major version:

  1. The release cannot be tagged v2.x as designed. The module path
    github.com/ably/ably-pubsub-go has no /v2 suffix, so Go rejects a v2.0.0
    tag (B1).
  2. One of the PR's three stated goals is not done. The PR promises
    "deletion of deprecated methods" and the Java branch did it. Apart from the
    Channels.Release behaviour change added in 34f5bd5, no deprecated symbol
    was removed in Go, and the legacy host options are re-exported from both new
    entry points. One option, WithHTTPHost, was even renamed while
    staying deprecated (B2, M1).
  3. The migration guide (UPDATING.md) has a non-compiling example and
    unsafe device guidance, and omits several breaking changes
    (M3, M4, M8).
    All three open Copilot review comments are valid.
  4. Server-side declaration plus token auth is rejected by realtime with
    40167.
    The Java branch found this. Nothing in Go documents, guards or tests
    it (M5).
  5. The re-export generator and its drift test were deleted. The commit
    message says they were moved. About 2,870 lines of hand-written aliases now
    have no guard (M2).
  6. The public packages' godoc shows no methods or fields. Every type is an
    alias of an internal type, so go doc and pkg.go.dev list nothing under
    HTTPClient, Message and the rest (M11).

Severity scale: Blocker = must fix before merge. Major = should fix in
this PR. Minor = fix in this PR or open a tracked follow-up. Nit =
optional. Question = needs a decision from the owner.

1. Baseline validation (done by the lead reviewer)

Check Result
go build ./... ✅ pass
go vet ./..., go vet -tags=unit ./..., go vet -tags=integration ./... ✅ pass
gofmt -l on tracked .go files ✅ clean
go test -count=1 -tags=unit ./... (with the common submodule initialised) ✅ all 5 packages pass
go generate ./... leaves the tree clean (scripts/ci-generate.sh) ✅
GitHub CI on PR head 19864dab (check 1.25/1.26, integration json/msgpack × 1.25/1.26, build) ✅ all green
Re-run locally on 19864dab (build, vet all tags, unit tests, go generate drift) ✅ all clean
Test inventory, main vs branch ✅ 216 → 216 Test* functions (same on 19864dab). 7 were renamed TestREST* → TestHTTP*. None deleted, skipped or weakened.
Hidden behaviour changes inside the rename and move commits ✅ Only four non-mechanical changes: (1) the Ably-Agent identifier ably-go/ → ably-pubsub-go/; (2) WithAgents merges instead of replacing; (3) about 15 log prefixes RestClient: → HTTPClient:; (4) clientOptions fields renamed RESTHost → HTTPHost and IdempotentRESTPublishing → IdempotentHTTPPublishing. auth.go, state.go and realtime_conn.go have import and type-name changes only. go.sum is unchanged. The merge commit 8755534 adds no content of its own.
Hand-written api.go vs output of the deleted generator (re-run against the current tree) ✅ byte-identical today, apart from the removed "Code generated" header
External consumer modules using only server/pubsub or only device/pubsub (replace directive) ✅ both build and vet. The only unnameable values are the LiveObjects constants (M7).

3. Blockers

B1 — Module path cannot carry a v2.x tag; old v1.x tags conflict after the repo rename

  • Location: go.mod:1, README.md:46-50
  • Evidence:
    • go.mod declares module github.com/ably/ably-pubsub-go (no /v2).
    • An earlier revision of UPDATING.md claimed "The rename replaces the /v2 path suffix … so there is no github.com/ably/ably-go/v2". The latest push removed that sentence, but the underlying problem in go.mod remains.
    • The Go modules reference (Major version suffixes) says that from v2.0.0 on, the module path must end in /vN. A new path does not reset this rule.
    • Reproduced with a file:// GOPROXY serving this module at v2.0.0. go get …@v2.0.0 fails with invalid version: should be v0 or v1, not v2.
    • The repo still has tags v1.0.0 … v1.4.1, and their go.mod declares github.com/ably/ably-go (git show v1.4.1:go.mod). After the repo is renamed, go get github.com/ably/ably-pubsub-go@latest resolves v1.4.1 and fails with a module-path mismatch.
    • Commit 97a790b itself says "a /v2 module path is required before release".
  • Why it matters: the release would produce a module nobody can go get. The migration guide also states a false rule.
  • Fix (pick one, record the decision in the PR). Feasibility was re-tested with a local file:// proxy serving v1.4.1 (old module line) and v1.5.0 (new module line).
    1. Keep the new path and tag v1.5.0 or higher. Treat "2.0" as the product version only.
      • Verified: @latest on the new path resolves v1.5.0 and works. @v1.0.0–@v1.4.1 stay listed but fail with "module declares its path as … ably-go but was required as … ably-pubsub-go".
      • Gotcha 1 (inferred, not reproduced): after the repo rename, old-path users running go get -u github.com/ably/ably-go would see @latest jump to v1.5.0 and hit the reverse path mismatch.
      • Gotcha 2: a // Deprecated: notice on the old module (M10) works only if the old path's @latest go.mod carries it. Once v1.5.0 exists in the same repo, a v1.4.2 deprecation tag is no longer the latest, so the notice becomes unreachable.
      • Set clientLibraryVersion to match (M9).
    2. Use github.com/ably/ably-pubsub-go/v2 and tag v2.0.0 (recommended).
      • Under the Go modules rules, v2.x tags are ignored for the unsuffixed path, so the old path's @latest stays on v1.4.x (including a deprecation tag), and the old v1.x tags never apply to the /v2 path. Expected from the spec; not reproduced locally.
      • Cost: update go.mod, every import (internal, tests, examples, docs) and the badges.
    • Either way, state the chosen scheme in UPDATING.md ("The module is now …" section, lines 5-13) and fix the README install command to match. Never re-tag a published version: the proxy and sumdb cache by path and version.

B2 — Legacy host options are still public in both entry points

  • Location:
    • internal/ably/options.go:269-290: fields HTTPHost, FallbackHostsUseDefault, RealtimeHost, Environment.
    • internal/ably/options.go:1166-1170: WithEnvironment.
    • :1237-1239: WithHTTPHost.
    • :1259-1261: WithRealtimeHost.
    • :1413-1417: WithFallbackHostsUseDefault.
    • The first line of each range is the // Deprecated: comment; the last is the func.
    • Re-exported at server/pubsub/api.go ~1247/1275/1299/1403 and device/pubsub/api.go ~1100/1128/1152/1256.
  • Evidence:
    • All four options are marked // Deprecated:.
    • Commit 97a790b renamed WithRESTHost → WithHTTPHost, so the new name is deprecated from birth.
    • UPDATING.md:89 still lists ably.WithRESTHost → ably.WithHTTPHost as a rename. The latest push dropped the "will be removed in a future version" note, but the option itself is unchanged.
    • options.go:457-462 still rejects the mix of endpoint and the legacy options, with the message "cannot use endpoint with any of deprecated options environment, realtimeHost, restHost or FallbackHostsUseDefault".
  • Java reference:
    • ba473268 "Replace environment, restHost and realtimeHost with endpoint" removed them outright "so old code fails to compile rather than silently connecting to production".
    • 59bb1da2 removed fallbackHostsUseDefault.
    • Java now has only endpoint, with no restHost equivalent: one host serves both HTTP and realtime.
  • Why it matters: this is the only window to remove them. If v2 ships them, they stay public until v3. Renaming a deprecated option adds churn and keeps the debt.
  • Fix:
    • Delete WithEnvironment, WithHTTPHost, WithRealtimeHost and WithFallbackHostsUseDefault from internal/ably/options.go and from both api.go files.
    • Remove the matching clientOptions fields. The internal HTTPHost used by defaultOptions / setActiveRealtimeHost (http_client.go:213) can become unexported.
    • Delete the conflict check at options.go:457-462.
    • Collapse getHTTPHost, getRealtimeHost and getFallbackHosts (options.go:~498-610) to the endpoint-only path (REC1/REC2). With that, a custom port no longer disables fallbacks, as in Java.
    • Migrate the tests that use the legacy options to WithEndpoint: internal/ably/options_test.go:131-298 and internal/ably/realtime_client_integration_test.go:60.
    • Spec note: the spec marks fallbackHostsUseDefault (REC2a1, REC2b) and restHost/realtimeHost (REC2c6) as optional-deprecated. Removal is therefore allowed but not mandated; the case for it is Java parity and the major-version window.
    • In UPDATING.md, change the WithRESTHost → WithHTTPHost row to "removed, use WithEndpoint" and add the endpoint migration section (see M8).

4. Major

M1 — Other deprecated API not removed, contrary to the PR description

  • Evidence: git diff -M origin/main...19864dab removes zero Deprecated: lines. Still present:

    Symbol Location Replacement
    Connection.RecoveryKey() internal/ably/realtime_conn.go:517 CreateRecoveryKey(). Java removed Connection.recoveryKey.
    PublishMultipleWithParams (option) internal/ably/http_channel.go:98. :101 says "TODO: Remove this in the next major version bump to 2.x.x". Re-exported at server/pubsub/api.go:1009. PublishWithParams (http_channel.go:92)
    HTTPChannel.PublishMultipleWithOptions internal/ably/http_channel.go:181. :183 has the same TODO. PublishMultiple
    clientOptions.TimeoutConnect internal/ably/options.go:367 (comment), :373 (field), :613-618 (timeoutConnect() helper). There is no WithTimeoutConnect option function, so this is internal clean-up only. RealtimeRequestTimeout
    Channels.Release on a non-terminal channel ✅ Done in 34f5bd5 (RTS4c-e). Release(name) now returns ErrorInfo code 90011 for a non-releasable state, and its ctx parameter is gone. This is a breaking signature change that UPDATING.md does not yet mention (M8). —
    http_channel.go:60 comment A TODO to rename PublishMultipleOption "…when we perform the next major version bump to 2.x.x" Do it, or reword

    Not a removal candidate: Message.ConnectionKey (internal/ably/proto_message.go:175).

    • It carries a stale // Deprecated: marker, but spec TM2h keeps connectionKey as a live attribute (publish on behalf of a connection).
    • Go's PublishWithConnectionKey (http_channel.go:85) depends on it.
    • Java integration/v2 keeps public String connectionKey (Message.java:48).
    • Action: keep the field and drop the incorrect Deprecated: marker.
  • Fix: remove RecoveryKey, PublishMultipleWithParams, PublishMultipleWithOptions and TimeoutConnect. Channels.Release is already done. Update callers, for example realtime_conn_spec_integration_test.go:1944,1970-1971 for RecoveryKey. Add a "Removed deprecated API" table to UPDATING.md. If the team decides to defer this, change the PR description so it does not claim deprecated methods were deleted.

M2 — Re-export generator and drift test deleted; commit message says otherwise

  • Evidence:
    • Commit 428a794 added internal/cmd/genapi/main.go (764 lines) and genapi_test.go. Its message explains why: "a hand-written mirror of ~200 declarations drifts the first time internal/ably changes … genapi_test.go fails when the generated files no longer match".
    • Commit 19864da deleted both files and renamed api_gen.go → api.go. Its message says only "The genapi targets, go generate hints … follow the new paths".
    • UPDATING.md:61-62 now says the re-exports "are written by hand; add to them when the API of internal/ably grows".
    • The tests reference 26 distinct pubsub.* identifiers (server) and 28 (device), out of 303 server exports. Nothing fails if internal/ably gains an export that is never re-exported. Users cannot reach internal/ably, so a missed re-export becomes a missing feature.
    • Re-running the recovered generator (from 9450ab9, re-targeted at server/pubsub and device/pubsub) shows no drift today.
  • Fix (preferred):
    • git checkout 9450ab9 -- internal/cmd/genapi.
    • Set the output dir values to server/pubsub and device/pubsub.
    • Make the output filename and the handWritten exclusion agree (api.go, or go back to api_gen.go).
    • Restore the // Code generated … DO NOT EDIT. header and //go:generate lines.
    • Restore genapi_test.go.
    • Update UPDATING.md:61-62.
    • The generator also derives the device omission set and can fix the dangling doc links in m5 at the source.
  • Alternative: add a go/types completeness test. It compares exported internal/ably (+ objects) names with server/pubsub, using an allow-list of Realtime, NewRealtime and WithDial, and asserts the exact device omission set. Happy to share the prototype.
  • Also note this in the merge commit or squash message (see m10).

M3 — UPDATING.md rename tables and "Example" use the unimportable ably. package; stale .../server path

(Extends Copilot comment r4312810122. The latest push fixed the "After" example and the thread is now resolved, but the rest remains.)

  • Location: UPDATING.md:73-89 (tables) and :104-105 (closing sentence). The Example at :92-101 is fixed on 19864dab.

  • Evidence:

    • The "After" example client, err := ably.NewHTTPClient(ably.WithKey(key)) fails to compile for an external module with use of internal package github.com/ably/ably-pubsub-go/internal/ably not allowed.
    • The closing sentence says "reach users through .../server", but the package is .../server/pubsub (moved in 19864da).
    • With pubsub. qualifiers, every name in both tables exists in server/pubsub and the example compiles.
  • Fix: write the "After" column and example against the public package:

    // Before
    import "github.com/ably/ably-go/ably"
    client, err := ably.NewREST(ably.WithKey(key))
    var channel *ably.RESTChannel = client.Channels.Get("some-channel")

    // After
    import "github.com/ably/ably-pubsub-go/server/pubsub"
    client, err := pubsub.NewHTTPClient(pubsub.WithKey(key))
    var channel *pubsub.HTTPChannel = client.Channels.Get("some-channel")
    • Use ably.REST → pubsub.HTTPClient, ably.NewREST → pubsub.NewHTTPClient, and so on in the tables.
    • Replace .../server with github.com/ably/ably-pubsub-go/server/pubsub.

M4 — Device examples use an API key

(Confirms open Copilot comments r4312809979 and r4312810061.)

  • Location:

    • UPDATING.md:45: pubsub.NewClient(pubsub.WithKey(key)).
    • README.md:105-106: "On an end-user device, the same code imports … device/pubsub instead and calls pubsub.NewClient". The snippet it refers to uses WithKey("your-ably-api-key").
  • Why it matters:

    • The device/server split is defined by auth: API keys stay on servers, devices use a clientId with tokens. The first device example tells users to ship a secret in a client app.
    • The Java device door keeps key auth available, so this is about guidance, not a hard API ban. See Q1.
  • Fix: give a device-specific snippet that uses token auth. The API-surface reviewer verified this compiles with device/pubsub alone:

    import "github.com/ably/ably-pubsub-go/device/pubsub"

    client, err := pubsub.NewClient(
        pubsub.WithAuthURL("https://your-server.example.com/ably/token"),
        pubsub.WithClientID("user-123"),
    )

    In the README, replace "the same code" with this snippet. Add one sentence saying API keys must never be embedded in device apps.

M5 — Server side-agent plus token auth is rejected by realtime (40167); undocumented and untested

  • Java evidence:
    • Commit 5357618c: "realtime rejects a token-authenticated connection that declares the server side through the agent entry alone, with 40167 'a connection or request may only declare itself as a server via a signed x-ably-clientType token claim' … Key-auth server clients are unaffected (verified against sandbox)."
    • Commit 79369859, paraphrased: a JWT with the signed x-ably-clientType=server claim is "the only server-side declaration realtime accepts on token auth". Native Ably tokens cannot carry the claim yet.
  • Confidence: Java verified this against the sandbox using the same ably-pubsub-server agent token. Go sends the identical token, so it is expected to apply, because this is server-side platform behaviour. It has not been reproduced from Go; the sandbox test in the fix below would confirm it.
  • Go evidence:
    • server/pubsub.NewHTTPClient and NewRealtimeClient always add ably-pubsub-server (server/pubsub/server.go:20,31,39).
    • server/pubsub re-exports WithToken, WithTokenDetails, WithAuthURL and WithAuthCallback.
    • The package doc says servers "typically" authenticate with an API key (server/pubsub/server.go:2).
    • No Go integration test goes through server/pubsub or device/pubsub. git grep finds no import of either package in *_integration_test.go. Integration tests construct clients from internal/ably directly, so the side agent never reaches the sandbox in CI.
  • Why it matters: a server application that uses token auth (common for a backend minting tokens for itself, or JWT setups) will compile, then fail at runtime with 40167 after migrating to v2.
  • Fix:
    • Document the constraint in server/pubsub/server.go, the README table and UPDATING.md: server clients must use an API key or a JWT with the signed x-ably-clientType=server claim.
    • Replace "typically".
    • Add at least one sandbox integration test through server/pubsub (key auth, publish and subscribe) and one through device/pubsub (token auth), so the side agents are exercised against the real service.
    • Consider whether NewRealtimeClient should warn when it is configured for token-only auth.

M6 — New agent identifiers not registered in ably-common agents.json

  • Evidence:
    • common/protocol/agents.json (submodule @ 82d52d1) has only "identifier": "ably-go" (line 527) and the mapping "ably-go": "ably-go/${version}" (line 705).
    • There is no ably-pubsub-go, ably-pubsub-server or ably-pubsub-device.
    • Upstream ably/ably-common main does not have them either, so a submodule bump will not fix this.
    • Commit 13712f1 changed ablySDKIdentifier to "ably-pubsub-go/" + clientLibraryVersion (internal/ably/proto_http.go:27).
  • Why it matters: agent analytics and MAU classification depend on these identifiers. Java notes that the -server suffix is what grants the MAU exemption.
  • Fix: open an ably-common PR registering these (corrected 2026-10-23) no new PR is needed: Register the Pub/Sub split agent identifiers: per-side flags and per-language families ably-common#361 (open, approved) already registers ably-pubsub-go, ably-pubsub-server, ably-pubsub-device and the other language families. Ask for Need a migration guide for users going from 1.1.5 to 1.2.0 #361 to merge; bumping the common submodule is not blocking, since Go reads neither file at runtime. Link the PR in the description.
  • Blocker for the bump: 34f5bd5 says the common pin could not be bumped because the errors.go generator "cannot parse the current errors.json format", so ErrChannelReleaseInvalidState (90011) was added to error_names.go by hand. Fix scripts/errors first (or as part of the bump). Otherwise the agent registration can't be picked up. (error_names.go itself is hand-maintained; the generator writes only errors.go, so the hand-added constant is safe.)

M7 — LiveObjects constants not re-exported; regression vs public ably/objects

  • Location:

    • Source: internal/ably/objects/liveobjects.go:49-55 (Operation_MapCreate, Operation_MapSet, Operation_MapRemove, Operation_CounterCreate, Operation_CounterInc, Operation_Delete) and :127-128 (Map_LWW).
    • grep -c "Operation_\|Map_LWW" returns 0 for both api.go files.
  • Why it matters: on main, github.com/ably/ably-go/ably/objects was public and these constants could be used. Now the types are aliased (ObjectsOperationAction, ObjectsMapSemantics) but their values cannot be named. Plugin authors must write pubsub.ObjectsOperationAction(0). The deleted generator had the same gap.

  • Fix: in both api.go files, and in the generator if it is restored (M2):

    const (
        ObjectsOperationMapCreate     = objects.Operation_MapCreate
        ObjectsOperationMapSet        = objects.Operation_MapSet
        ObjectsOperationMapRemove     = objects.Operation_MapRemove
        ObjectsOperationCounterCreate = objects.Operation_CounterCreate
        ObjectsOperationCounterInc    = objects.Operation_CounterInc
        ObjectsOperationDelete        = objects.Operation_Delete
        ObjectsMapLWW                 = objects.Map_LWW
    )

    Add these names to the objects.X → pubsub.ObjectsX note in UPDATING.md:53-56.

M8 — UPDATING.md omits several breaking or behavioural changes

What the guide covers today (on 19864dab): the module path, the two entry points, and REST → HTTP. Missing, each confirmed against the diff:

Missing topic Evidence Proposed content
Channels.Release breaking change (new in 34f5bd5) realtime_channel.go:206-232: Release(ctx, name) → Release(name), and it now returns ErrorInfo code 90011 unless the channel is INITIALIZED, DETACHED or FAILED, instead of detaching first. "Channels.Release no longer takes a context.Context and no longer detaches the channel for you. Call RealtimeChannel.Detach and wait for it before Release, otherwise it returns error 90011."
The old ably package is gone (removed from the guide in the latest push) 19864dab deleted the "The ably package is now internal" section. The guide no longer says that github.com/ably/ably-go/ably no longer exists or that the implementation is unimportable. Restore one sentence: "github.com/ably/ably-go/ably no longer exists. The implementation is internal; import server/pubsub or device/pubsub instead."
Ably-Agent identifier change proto_http.go:27: ably-go/<v> → ably-pubsub-go/<v>. The doors append ably-pubsub-server or ably-pubsub-device. "Requests now identify as ably-pubsub-go/<version> plus a side flag. Proxies or analytics that match on ably-go/ must be updated."
WithAgents merges instead of replacing internal/ably/options.go:~1195-1210 (commit e8a9522) "Calling WithAgents more than once now accumulates entries. The same key is overwritten. The side agent cannot be removed."
Endpoint migration (after B2) grep -n endpoint UPDATING.md returns nothing Follow Java UPGRADING.md §5 (ba473268), adjusted for Go. Mapping: WithEnvironment("sandbox") → WithEndpoint("nonprod:sandbox"); WithHTTPHost/WithRealtimeHost (same host) → WithEndpoint("<host>"); different hosts are unsupported. Resolution table, which matches Go's getHostnameFromEndpoint (options.go:536) and getEndpointFallbackHosts: unset → main.realtime.ably.net; name → name.realtime.ably.net; nonprod:name → name.realtime.ably-nonprod.net; a hostname (contains . or ::, or is localhost) → used as given, with no default fallbacks. Firewall: Go's defaults are unchanged (main on origin/main already resolved to main.realtime.ably.net and main.[a-e].fallback.ably-realtime.com). The note applies only to users of WithEnvironment, WithRESTHost or WithRealtimeHost: "traffic now goes to <name>.realtime.ably.net; allow *.realtime.ably.net and *.fallback.ably-realtime.com". Port: see m11. Edge case: WithRESTHost("localhost:8080") must become WithEndpoint("localhost") + WithPort(8080), because localhost:8080 is not treated as a hostname (REC1b2) and resolves to localhost:8080.realtime.ably.net.
Removed deprecated API (after M1) — Table of old symbol → replacement.
Token auth on server clients (M5) — The 40167 constraint.
Log prefix change About 15 RestClient: prefixes are now HTTPClient: One line, for log-scraping users.
Examples moved examples/rest → examples/http One line.
go mod edit -droprequire does not rewrite imports UPDATING.md:10-13 Add an import-rewrite recipe, as Java's guide gives a sed script. Use a portable form (sed -i '' is BSD-only and GNU sed -i is GNU-only): grep -rl 'ably-go/ably"' --include='*.go' . | xargs perl -pi -e 's#github.com/ably/ably-go/ably"#github.com/ably/ably-pubsub-go/server/pubsub"#'. That rewrites only the main import. Also cover: (a) imports of .../ably/objects (removed; objects.X → pubsub.ObjectsX), (b) ably. → pubsub. qualifiers, (c) the REST → HTTP renames.

M9 — Version, CHANGELOG and release-process files not updated for 2.0

  • Evidence:
    • internal/ably/proto_http.go:14: clientLibraryVersion = "1.4.1", so every request sends ably-pubsub-go/1.4.1. Java bumped to 2.0.0 (2453f811).
    • CHANGELOG.md has no entry after 1.4.1.
    • CONTRIBUTING.md release steps still say ably-go and git tag v1.2.3.
  • Why it matters: v2 traffic would be counted as the 1.x fleet. Release steps would tag the wrong path or version.
  • Fix:
    • Set clientLibraryVersion to the version you will actually tag (depends on B1). Use a -dev suffix until release if that is the policy.
    • Add a CHANGELOG "Unreleased / 2.0.0" entry that links UPDATING.md.
    • Update the CONTRIBUTING release section.
    • Follow-up: add a CI pre-flight that fails when the tag ≠ clientLibraryVersion or go list -m ≠ the expected module path. This is the Go analogue of Java's verifyReleaseArtifacts / release-dry-run (4ead47fd).

M10 — No plan for the old module or repo rename

  • Evidence:
    • README.md:46-50 says the new path "does not resolve and go get will fail" until the repo moves. This is dev-time text that will ship if nobody removes it.
    • The old module has no // Deprecated: use github.com/ably/ably-pubsub-go comment in its go.mod.
    • .github/workflows/docs.yml:57 still uses the AWS role ably-sdk-builds-ably-go, and :48 hard-codes a github.com/ably/ably-go source link.
    • .github/workflows/features.yml:17 has repository-name: ably-go.
    • Badges point to ably/ably-go.
  • Fix: add a release checklist to the PR description (or a tracked issue) covering:
    1. the repo rename, and the redirect behaviour for go get;
    2. a final ably-go v1 release whose go.mod carries the // Deprecated: comment. That tag must remain the old path's @latest, which constrains the B1 choice;
    3. updates to workflow, role and features.yml names;
    4. pkg.go.dev indexing of the new path;
    5. removing the README NOTE;
    6. the Go-proxy behaviour of the old tags (see B1).

M11 — Public packages document no fields or methods (alias-only godoc)

  • Location: every type X = ably.X in server/pubsub/api.go and device/pubsub/api.go.

  • Evidence: GOFLAGS=-mod=mod go doc ./server/pubsub HTTPClient prints only:

    type HTTPClient = ably.HTTPClient
        HTTPClient is a server Pub/Sub client that operates entirely over HTTP.
    func NewHTTPClient(opts ...ClientOption) (*HTTPClient, error)

    No methods are listed (Stats, Time, Channels, …). go doc ./server/pubsub Message likewise shows no fields. pkg.go.dev renders aliases the same way, so RealtimeChannel.Publish, Connection.On and the rest are invisible under the public import paths.

  • Why it matters: the public packages are now the only documented entry points (m7), and their reference pages hide the whole method set and every struct field. This is a real usability regression versus pkg.go.dev/github.com/ably/ably-go/ably.

  • Fix (choose one):

    1. State in each package doc, and on the key client types, that the full method and field reference is on the internal/ably page, and publish that page (gopages already does).
    2. Add method summaries to the doc comments of HTTPClient, RealtimeClient, Client, RealtimeChannel, HTTPChannel, Message and the other key types. A restored generator (M2) could emit these.
    3. Make the public types defined types or wrappers instead of aliases. This is a large change, and it breaks the "same type in both packages" property.
  • Severity: Major. Downgrade to Minor if the team accepts option 1 as sufficient.

5. Minor

m1 — Ably-Agent header order is nondeterministic

  • Location: internal/ably/proto_http.go:46-72 (ablyAgentIdentifier ranges over map[string]string).
  • Evidence: server_test.go:~54 already falls back to strings.Contains because the order varies. Every door client now carries at least one extra agent, and two or more when the user passes WithAgents.
  • The realtime path reuses the same function (internal/ably/websocket.go:122), so the WebSocket handshake header is nondeterministic too.
  • Fix: sort the keys in ablyAgentIdentifier before joining, which fixes both paths, then assert the exact header string in a test with two or more agents.

m2 — No literal agent canary test; "load-bearing suffix" not documented

  • Evidence:
    • Tests build their expectation from ably.AgentIdentifier(...) / AblySDKIdentifier, so a wrong family or version in proto_http.go still passes.
    • Java pins ably-pubsub-java/2.0.0 literally in RealtimeHttpHeaderTest (2453f811). Its Side.java warns that the -server / -device suffixes drive MAU classification and must not be renamed.
  • Fix:
    • Add one unit test asserting the literal prefix ably-pubsub-go/<version> and the literal tokens ably-pubsub-server and ably-pubsub-device, with a comment to bump it alongside the version.
    • Add the "load-bearing, do not rename" warning to agentName in server/pubsub/server.go:20 and device/pubsub/device.go:21.

m3 — Test gaps for the new entry points and WithAgents

Missing tests:

  • A side-agent test for server/pubsub.NewRealtimeClient (only NewHTTPClient is tested).
  • A merge-with-user-agents test for device/pubsub.NewClient.
  • WithAgents unit tests in internal/ably/options_test.go: nil start, two calls accumulate, same key overrides, caller map not mutated or aliased.
  • A test that the caller's opts slice is not mutated by append(opts[:len(opts):len(opts)], …).
  • An exact device-omission-set test (covered if M2 restores the generator test).

m4 — "Device omits …" list in UPDATING.md is incomplete

  • Location: UPDATING.md:50-52, device/pubsub/device.go:12-13.
  • Evidence:
    • server/pubsub exports 303 names and device/pubsub exports 271. 34 names are server-only. Four of them are the server client types and constructors (HTTPClient, RealtimeClient, NewHTTPClient, NewRealtimeClient), so 30 HTTP-only API names are omitted from device. Device adds Client and NewClient.
    • The guide's list misses HTTPChannels, HTTPRequest, HTTPPaginatedResponse, ChannelDetails, ChannelStatus, ChannelOccupancy, ChannelMetrics, the PresenceHistory* options, PresenceRequest, PublishMultipleOption, PublishWithParams, PublishMultipleWithParams and PublishWithConnectionKey. Device keeps Stats, StatsRequest, Time, WithHTTPClient, WithHTTPRequestTimeout and WithIdempotentHTTPPublishing, which are legitimate for a realtime client but surprising to a reader.
  • Fix: list the omitted groups precisely, or say "everything reachable only from HTTPClient" and link a generated list. State what stays.

m5 — Dangling doc links in the api.go files

  • Evidence:
    • device/pubsub/api.go:24,28,43,46,56,60,166,1140 link [HTTPChannel] / [HTTPClient], which device does not export.
    • [Realtime] resolves in neither package (server/pubsub/api.go:24,75). The names are RealtimeClient and Client.
    • server/pubsub/api.go:180 points to a "Paginated results" section in the package-level documentation that only exists in internal/ably/doc.go.
  • Fix: rewrite links per package. The generator in M2 can do this. Otherwise move the docs (m7).

m6 — Stale doc text

Fix at the source in internal/ably, then regenerate or copy:

  • "see ably-go/ably/objects/liveobjects.go": internal/ably/realtime_experimental_objects.go:11, server/pubsub/api.go:236, device/pubsub/api.go:170.
  • "interface for REST API operations on a channel", "response of a REST request", "When using REST", "rather than REST": server/pubsub/api.go:119,132,1018,1084,1411, device/pubsub/api.go:937.
  • "…planned for ably-go v2.0" (Stats v3): internal/ably/proto_http.go:22, internal/ably/http_client.go:194. Either do it now or say "a future major version".
  • internal/ably/doc.go:16,84: links the ably-go README and repo. The :16 anchor #using-the-realtime-api does not exist in the current README.
  • Other static ably-go references: internal/ably/error_names.go:3, internal/ablytest/ablytest.go:1,5, README.md:3,111,170. Leave those that point at the repo URL until the rename (M10); fix the ones that name the package or path.
  • internal/ably/options.go:458,521: user-facing error and warning text names restHost, while the Go option is WithHTTPHost. Resolved by B2.

m7 — User-facing package docs stranded in internal/ably/doc.go; gopages publishes internal packages

  • Evidence:
    • The overview, Event Emitters and Paginated results sections live in internal/ably/doc.go, which pkg.go.dev users of the public packages will not read.
    • The new docs.yml source-link template {{.Path}} looks correct (not verified end to end), but gopages now also publishes internal/ably, internal/ablytest, examples and scripts.
  • Fix:
    • Move the user-facing sections into server/pubsub/server.go and device/pubsub/device.go, or a shared doc.go in each.
    • Leave internal/ably/doc.go as an implementation note.
    • Restrict gopages to the public packages, if it supports that.

m8 — UPDATING.md and README.md structure and formatting

  • UPDATING.md:73,84,92: "Renamed types", "Renamed functions" and "Example" use ###, the same level as "The REST prefix is now HTTP" (:64). They should be ####.
  • Double blank line at UPDATING.md:106-107.
  • README.md:~53-57: "…which one you import depends on where your code runs:" is followed by an unrelated paragraph before the table. Move the "Both packages are named pubsub" paragraph after the table. (The same issue in UPDATING.md was fixed by the latest push.)
  • The README usage snippet is a fragment (bare return err). Wrap it in func run() error { … } or use log.Fatal.

m9 — README.md and CONTRIBUTING.md leftovers

  • README.md:~129: "the ably-go SDK will route its traffic…". Badges and the support link still say ably-go. Fine until the rename, but add them to the M10 checklist.
  • README.md has no link to the new UPDATING.md section from the install or usage area.
  • README.md:61 / UPDATING.md:19: "Connections are exempt from monthly-active-user counting". Confirm the wording with product. Java states the exemption is keyed on the -server suffix.
  • CONTRIBUTING.md:3-7 still says development must happen under $GOPATH/src/github.com/ably/ably-go "because this package uses internal packages". This is obsolete with modules. Describe the new server/, device/ and internal/ layout instead.

m10 — Commit history does not describe the final state

  • 428a794 explains a generator and drift test that 19864da later deleted. The 19864da message does not mention the deletion (M2).
  • 428a794's "Generate the re-exports rather than listing them …" paragraph is no longer true, and neither is its claim that genapi_test.go catches drift.
  • e8a9522's body names the side agents ably-go-pubsub-device / ably-go-pubsub-server. The final identifiers are ably-pubsub-device / ably-pubsub-server, changed silently in 13712f1.
  • 13712f1 "Update Ably-Agent identifiers to 'ably-pubsub' standard" has an empty body, though it changes wire-visible identifiers.
  • 97a790b says "a /v2 module path is required before release", which contradicts the later module-rename rationale (B1).
  • Fix: if this lands with a merge commit, reword with git rebase -i on the integration branch, or add a fix-up commit whose message records the generator removal and agent rationale. If it is squash-merged, write the squash message from the final state. Per the repo convention, do not put PR or issue numbers in commit messages.

m11 — A custom port still suppresses default fallbacks (diverges from REC2 and Java)

  • Location: internal/ably/options.go:590-610 (getFallbackHosts), :1462-1468 (applyOptionsWithDefaults clears Endpoint).
  • Evidence:
    • With no endpoint set, Endpoint is cleared and getFallbackHosts takes the legacy branch.
    • It returns default fallbacks only when opts.FallbackHosts == nil && empty(opts.HTTPHost) && empty(opts.RealtimeHost) && isDefaultPort.
    • So WithPort/WithTLSPort on a default-host client drops all fallbacks.
    • REC2 has no port rule. Java ba473268: "a custom port or tlsPort no longer suppresses the default fallbacks". Clients with an explicit WithEndpoint already ignore the port in Go.
  • Fix:
    • With B2, resolve the unset endpoint to main through the endpoint path, so getFallbackHosts ignores ports.
    • Check the tests that rely on the current behaviour (localhost + WithPort + WithTLS(false), e.g. internal/ablytest/sandbox.go:~350). They may need an explicit hostname endpoint, which has no fallbacks.
    • Document it in the endpoint section of UPDATING.md (M8).

m12 — WithEndpoint doc comment is a placeholder

  • Location: internal/ably/options.go:1153-1157 (re-exported in both packages).
  • Evidence: the parameter is still named env string, and the doc says only "sets a custom endpoint … (see Platform Customization)". After B2 it becomes the only host option, but it documents none of the resolution forms.
  • Fix:
    • Rename the parameter to endpoint.
    • Document the four forms: unset, routing-policy name, nonprod: name, and hostname (contains . or ::, or localhost; no fallbacks).
    • Note that host:port is not recognised as a hostname. Use WithEndpoint("localhost") + WithPort(n).

m13 — The README install command installs no package

  • Location: README.md:43 (go get -u github.com/ably/ably-pubsub-go), UPDATING.md:11.
  • Evidence: the module root has no Go files. Tested with an equivalent module: go get -u <module-root> exits 0 but only adds require … // indirect, and nothing importable is fetched at the root.
  • Fix: use go get github.com/ably/ably-pubsub-go/server/pubsub (or /device/pubsub), or "import one of the two packages and run go mod tidy". Adjust for the B1 decision (/v2).

m14 — Some re-exports have empty or placeholder doc comments

  • Location:
    • server/pubsub/api.go:36: type ChannelEventEmitter = ably.ChannelEventEmitter has no doc comment.
    • :51-52: ChannelProperties has only // CP2.
    • Same in device/pubsub/api.go.
  • Fix: write real doc comments at the source (internal/ably), then regenerate (M2) or copy them across.

6. Nits

  • n1 — Unexported rest* names left after the rename.
    • restURL() at internal/ably/options.go:552, already exposed in tests as HTTPURL.
    • The Realtime.rest field and the Rest() test accessor at export_test.go:236.
    • The loop variable restChannel at http_client.go:73.
    • The "idempotent rest" comment at internal/ably/internal/ablyutil/idempotent.go:8.
    • Test locals rest, restClient and restMsgRecorder.
    • Optional consistency pass.
  • n2 — Name clash in ablytest. ablytest.NewREST became ablytest.NewHTTPClient (returns (*Sandbox, *ably.HTTPClient)), and the old ablytest.NewHTTPClient() *http.Client became unexported newHTTPClient. Two near-identical names now have different meanings. Consider renaming one, e.g. NewSandboxHTTPClient.
  • n3 — examples/README.md. Lines 7-14: the "pub-sub" item says go run presence/main.go and the "presence" item says go run pub-sub/main.go. This predates the PR. examples/http/status is not listed.
  • n4 — WithDial wording. UPDATING.md:57-59 says no caller "could ever have supplied an argument". WithDial(nil) compiles; it is just useless. Reword to "could ever have supplied a usable argument".

7. Questions for the owner

  • Q1 — Should the device entry point expose key-based auth? device/pubsub exports WithKey and AuthWithKey, and Client.Auth.CreateTokenRequest / RequestToken are reachable. The Java device door also keeps key auth, so this is consistent with Java. If that stays, M4 (docs guidance) is enough. If it should not stay, it has to be enforced in device.NewClient, because aliasing cannot drop methods.
  • Q2 — Device has no Request(). Go's Realtime has only Auth, Channels, Connection, Connect, Close, Stats and Time. The Java device client documents request() and batchPublish(). Is this intentional for Go? If parity is wanted, it is a follow-up to add Realtime.Request.
  • Q3 — Should the agent helpers be public? WithAgents, AgentIdentifier and AblyAgentHeaderName are re-exported in both packages.
    • The field doc at internal/ably/options.go:424 says agents "must only be used by Ably-authored SDKs (RSC7d6)". Re-exporting WithAgents from the v2 entry points goes against that intent.
    • The doors themselves call ably.WithAgents internally, so the public re-export is not needed for them.
    • Recommendation: decide whether Ably wrapper SDKs (Chat, Spaces, etc.) need WithAgents from the public package. If they do, keep it and document the RSC7d6 restriction on the re-export. Drop AgentIdentifier and AblyAgentHeaderName; the tests can import internal/ably.
  • Q4 — Conflicting side agents. A user can pass WithAgents(map[string]string{"ably-pubsub-device": ""}) to a server client.
    • Verified header: ably-pubsub-go/1.4.1 go/1.22.5 darwin/24.6.0 ably-pubsub-device ably-pubsub-server. Both flags are sent.
    • A user-supplied "ably-pubsub-server": "9.9" is silently overwritten by the empty side entry.
    • Should the doors reject or strip the opposite side's flag?
  • Q5 — Stats v3 migration. internal/ably/proto_http.go:22 and internal/ably/http_client.go:194 say the Stats migration "requires breaking API changes and is planned for ably-go v2.0". This PR is that v2.0 and does not include it. Is it in scope for 2.0, or deferred to a later major? Update the comments either way (m6).

Comment Status on GitHub Valid? Notes
CodeRabbit r4067161556, pubsub/device/device_test.go:37: expected ably-go-pubsub-device Resolved, outdated ✅ Was valid, now fixed device/pubsub/device_test.go:37 now asserts ably-pubsub-device, and the test passes.
Copilot r4312809979, README.md:106: device guidance reuses an API key Open ✅ Valid See M4.
Copilot r4312810061, UPDATING.md:58 (now line 45): device example passes an API key Open ✅ Valid See M4. Copilot rated it High. Agree it is Major for docs.
Copilot r4312810122, UPDATING.md:122: "After" example uses ably.NewHTTPClient / ably.HTTPChannel Resolved (after 19864dab fixed the example) ✅ Valid, partially fixed The example now uses pubsub.. The rename tables (:73-89) and the .../server sentence (:104) still don't compile or are wrong. See M3.
CodeRabbit full review Skipped (132 files > 100 limit) — No automated review of most files. This report covers that gap.

Note: gh pr view --json files truncates at 100 files. The PR really touches 132 files.

9. UPDATING.md assessment

Claim / section Correct? Issue
"The module is now github.com/ably/ably-pubsub-go" plus the commands ⚠️ The commands fail until the repo moves (M10). -droprequire does not rewrite imports (M8).
"The rename replaces the /v2 path suffix" ✅ Removed Removed in 19864dab. The versioning problem itself remains (B1).
"The ably package is now internal" section ❌ Removed Removed in 19864dab. The guide no longer says the old package is gone (M8).
Entry-point table ("The device and server packages") ⚠️ The "authenticate with an API key" line needs the token-auth caveat (M5). The MAU wording needs product confirmation (m9).
"Re-exports are type aliases; types are the same across both packages" ✅ Verified.
Before/after code for server ✅ Compiles.
Before/after code for device ⚠️ Compiles, but uses an API key (M4).
"Device omits …" bullet ⚠️ Incomplete. 30 HTTP-only names are omitted (m4).
Install command go get github.com/ably/ably-pubsub-go ⚠️ The module root has no package (m13).
Objects prefix bullet ⚠️ Correct for the 20 types. The constants are missing (M7).
WithDial bullet ✅ Minor wording nit (n4).
"Re-exports are written by hand" ⚠️ True now, but it records a regression (M2).
REST → HTTP section and tables ❌ Uses ably. qualifiers (M3). The WithRESTHost → WithHTTPHost row should become "removed" (B2).
Stats.REST unchanged — Note removed in 19864dab. The behaviour is still correct (json:"rest").
Example ✅ Fixed in 19864dab. Compiles.
Closing sentence (:104) ❌ Says .../server; should be .../server/pubsub (M3).
Missing: Channels.Release change, old-package removal, agent identifier, WithAgents merge, endpoint migration, deprecated removals, token-auth constraint, log prefix, examples move ❌ M8.
Formatting ⚠️ m8.

Conclusion: UPDATING.md is not yet properly updated. The latest push
removed the false /v2 claim and fixed the example. It still has non-compiling
rename tables (M3) and unsafe device guidance (M4). It now misses at least nine
user-visible changes (M8), including the new Channels.Release break and any
statement that the old ably package is gone.

10. Java (ably-java integration/v2) parity

Java change (commit) Go status Action
Doors: server HTTP and realtime builders, device realtime builder (686bdfdd, 10373ba0) ✅ Done (functional options instead of builders, by design) —
Family agent ably-pubsub-java/<ver> (Defaults.java; the UTS self-test adapted in f05ca1df) ✅ ably-pubsub-go/ (13712f1) Register it upstream (M6)
Versionless side flags ably-pubsub-server / ably-pubsub-device ✅ Add the load-bearing doc comment (m2)
User agents preserved and the side flag applied last ✅ Merge semantics. Go does not mutate caller options, which is better than Java. Tests (m3) and docs (M8)
Version bumped to 2.0.0 (VERSION_NAME, 518819db) plus a hard-coded agent canary test (2453f811) ❌ Still 1.4.1, no canary M9, m2
README "in-development 2.0" note (4ead47fd) ✅ Equivalent note at README.md:46-50 Remove at release (M10)
A custom port/tlsPort no longer suppresses default fallbacks (ba473268) ❌ It still does in Go m11
Release pre-flight and dry-run CI (4ead47fd) ❌ No analogue M9 follow-up
UTS core and server legs; 40167 handling (af1cc940, 5357618c, 79369859, 3ff4bb26) ❌ No side-mode tests at all M5 (docs plus sandbox test now). UTS legs as a follow-up.
REST → HTTP rename (f659eaee) ✅ (97a790b) —
Remove all deprecated API (59bb1da2) ⚠️ Only Channels.Release (34f5bd5, RTS4c-e) M1
endpoint replaces environment, restHost and realtimeHost, removed outright (ba473268) ❌ WithEndpoint exists, but the legacy options remain public and WithRESTHost was renamed instead of removed B2
UPGRADING.md sections: artifact choice, door builders, package mapping with sed script, removed-API table, endpoint table, firewall note ⚠️ Go covers only the module, internal package and rename M8
ClientOptions.copy() fixes, KMP/Android, GCM, JWT test helpers N/A for Go —

11. Suggested order of work

  1. Decide the versioning scheme and fix go.mod, UPDATING.md, the README and clientLibraryVersion together (B1, M9).
  2. Remove the legacy host options and the deprecated API, and update the tests (B2, M1). Alternatively, explicitly descope this and fix the PR description.
    Fold in the endpoint-only fallback logic and the WithEndpoint docs (m11, m12).
  3. Restore the generator and drift test, then add the Objects constants, fix the doc links and doc comments and the device omission list through it, and decide the godoc approach (M2, M7, M11, m4, m5, m6, m14).
  4. Rewrite UPDATING.md and the README (M3, M4, M5-docs, M8, m8, m9, m13) and resolve the three Copilot threads.
  5. Add tests: an agent canary, a deterministic header, a sandbox test per entry point, WithAgents units (m1, m2, m3, M5).
  6. Upstream registration in ably-common and a submodule bump (M6). Release checklist (M10).
  7. Tidy the commit history or squash message (m10). Optional nits.

12. Verified OK

  • Every exported internal/ably identifier (284) is re-exported by server/pubsub, except Realtime/NewRealtime (replaced by RealtimeClient/NewRealtimeClient) and WithDial (genuinely unusable).
  • Reachability is clean. Every type in the signature of every exported method or field on a re-exported type can be named from the package that exposes it.
  • Typed constants stay typed. var re-exports work for the enum-like struct vars. var Crypto = ably.Crypto is a struct copy, not an alias, and it works at runtime because the internal package's init() runs first.
  • The side-agent append append(opts[:len(opts):len(opts)], …) does not alias the caller's slice. The side agent cannot be overridden.
  • The RSC7d/RSC7d1 header format is intact (name/version, or a bare name when the version is empty).
  • Stats.REST is kept, with wire tags json:"rest" codec:"rest".
  • No exported REST/Rest identifiers remain, and no rest_*.go files remain.
  • Fixture paths (../../common/...) and generate.go paths are adjusted correctly.
  • CI workflows (check.yml, integration-test.yml) now use ./....
  • The docs source-link template {{.Path}} is believed correct but unverified, because gopages was not run end to end.
  • Examples build and import only server/pubsub.
  • go 1.18 directive unchanged, and no newer language features are used.

Review summary

Thanks for pulling this together. The overall shape is right, and the
mechanics are in good order:

  • Packages: the server/pubsub and device/pubsub entry points, the move
    of the implementation into internal/ably, and the REST → HTTP rename.
  • CI and tests: green on the PR. Locally, build, vet (all tags), gofmt,
    unit tests and go generate are clean. No test was lost or weakened in the
    move (216 → 216, 7 renames).
  • Re-exports: the hand-written api.go files are byte-identical to what
    the deleted genapi generator produces against the current tree, and a
    consumer module importing only one entry point builds and vets cleanly.

I've re-checked everything against the latest push (19864dab). Thanks for
34f5bd5: the Channels.Release change (RTS4c-e) is exactly the kind of
major-version clean-up this PR needs, and the UPDATING.md example is fixed.

I'm requesting changes for two blockers and a few decisions that need to
be made before this lands on main. Once main has the new module path
and public surface, changing them is a breaking change again.

The full report (findings with evidence, Java parity table, UPDATING.md
audit) is in the comment linked below. The IDs used here (B1, M2, …) refer
to it.

➡️ Full report: #712 (comment)

🛑 Blockers

B1 — The module can't be tagged v2 as designed.

  • go.mod is github.com/ably/ably-pubsub-go with no /v2 suffix. Go
    rejects v2.x tags on such a path. Reproduced with a local proxy:
    invalid version: should be v0 or v1, not v2.
  • The latest push removed the UPDATING.md sentence claiming the rename
    replaces the /v2 suffix, but the underlying problem is in go.mod.
  • The repo's existing v1.0.0–v1.4.1 tags declare github.com/ably/ably-go,
    so they will fail on the new path after the rename.
  • Details and both options are in the inline comment on go.mod.

B2 — The PR says it deletes deprecated methods, but almost none are deleted.

  • Apart from the Channels.Release change in 34f5bd5, the diff removes
    zero Deprecated: lines.
  • The legacy host options WithEnvironment, WithRealtimeHost and
    WithFallbackHostsUseDefault are re-exported from both new entry points.
  • WithRESTHost was renamed to WithHTTPHost and is still deprecated, so the
    new name starts out deprecated.
  • ably-java's integration/v2 removed all of these (59bb1da2, ba473268)
    in favour of endpoint alone.
  • See the inline comments on options.go and http_channel.go.

🧭 Decisions needed (@ttypic, @lmars)

# Decision Options My recommendation
1 Module versioning (B1) (a) github.com/ably/ably-pubsub-go/v2 + tag v2.0.0, or (b) keep the path and tag v1.5.0 or higher (a). With (b), old-path users who run go get -u jump to the new module and break, and a // Deprecated: tag on the old path can no longer be its @latest.
2 Deprecated API (B2, M1) Remove in this PR, or descope and fix the PR description Remove now. It's the only major-version window. Note: Message.ConnectionKey should stay (TM2h, used by PublishWithConnectionKey); only drop its stale Deprecated: marker.
3 Godoc for the public packages (M11) Point to the internal/ably reference, add method summaries, or use wrapper types Point to the internal reference now; add summaries via the generator later.
4 Server clients and token auth (M5) Document only, or also warn or fail fast Document it now and add a sandbox test through server/pubsub.
5 Device + API keys (Q1) Keep WithKey on device (as Java does) with docs steering to tokens, or restrict it Keep it, as Java does, and fix the docs (Copilot's threads).
6 Stats v3 (Q5) Comments say it is "planned for ably-go v2.0". In scope? Defer, and update the comments.

⚠️ Other major items (details inline or in the report)

  • M2: the genapi generator and its drift test were deleted in 19864da.
    That commit's message says they were moved. About 2,870 lines of re-exports
    now have no drift guard.
  • M3 / M4: the UPDATING.md example is fixed, but the rename tables and
    the closing .../server sentence still use the internal ably. package
    (inline comment). The device examples still embed an API key. Both
    still-open Copilot comments are valid; replies are on those threads.
  • M5: realtime rejects token-auth clients that declare server-side through
    the agent alone, with error 40167 (found on the Java branch, 5357618c).
    server/pubsub exposes token auth and says servers "typically" use keys.
    No Go integration test goes through either entry point.
  • M6: ably-pubsub-go, ably-pubsub-server and ably-pubsub-device are
    not registered in ably-common protocol/agents.json, upstream either.
    Bumping the pin is currently blocked by the errors.go generator not parsing
    the current errors.json (as noted in 34f5bd5).
  • M7: the LiveObjects constants (Operation_*, Map_LWW) can't be named
    from either entry point. They were public via ably/objects on main.
  • M8: UPDATING.md doesn't mention these changes:
    • the Channels.Release break from 34f5bd5 (no ctx, now returns 90011
      instead of detaching);
    • that github.com/ably/ably-go/ably is gone (that section was removed in
      the latest push);
    • the Ably-Agent identifier change;
    • WithAgents now merging instead of replacing;
    • the endpoint migration;
    • the removed API;
    • the token-auth constraint;
    • the RestClient: → HTTPClient: log prefix;
    • the move of examples/rest to examples/http.
  • M9: clientLibraryVersion is still "1.4.1" (internal/ably/proto_http.go:14),
    so v2 traffic reports as ably-pubsub-go/1.4.1. There is no CHANGELOG entry,
    and the CONTRIBUTING release steps still say ably-go / v1.2.3.
  • M10: we need a release checklist covering:
    • the repo rename;
    • a final ably-go v1 tag with a // Deprecated: comment that stays the
      old path's @latest;
    • workflow and role names (docs.yml:57, features.yml:17);
    • pkg.go.dev;
    • removing the README "does not resolve yet" note.
  • M11: every public type is an alias, so go doc and pkg.go.dev show no
    methods or fields under server/pubsub or device/pubsub.
Minor items and nits (14)
  • m1: the Ably-Agent header order follows map iteration, so it is
    nondeterministic on both HTTP and WebSocket (proto_http.go:57). Sort the keys.
  • m2: add a literal agent canary test (ably-pubsub-go/<ver>,
    ably-pubsub-server, ably-pubsub-device), and a "do not rename" note on
    agentName. The -server suffix drives MAU classification.
  • m3: missing tests:
    • NewRealtimeClient agent;
    • device merge-with-user-agents;
    • WithAgents unit tests;
    • caller opts not mutated.
  • m4: the "device omits …" list is incomplete. 30 HTTP-only names are
    omitted.
  • m5: dangling doc links: [HTTPChannel] and [HTTPClient] in
    device/pubsub/api.go, [Realtime] in both packages, and a "Paginated
    results" section that only exists in internal/ably/doc.go.
  • m6: stale text:
    • "REST API" wording in the doc comments;
    • see ably-go/ably/objects/liveobjects.go;
    • the doc.go links to ably-go;
    • restHost in error and warning strings (options.go:458,521).
  • m7: the user-facing package docs live in internal/ably/doc.go, and
    gopages also publishes internal/*, examples and scripts.
  • m8: UPDATING.md headings "Renamed types / functions / Example" should
    be ####, and there's a double blank line at :106-107. In the README, the
    "Both packages are named pubsub" paragraph sits between the lead-in and
    the table.
  • m9: README proxy section still says "ably-go SDK". CONTRIBUTING.md
    still requires a GOPATH checkout. The MAU-exemption wording needs product
    sign-off.
  • m10: commit messages that no longer describe the final state:
    • 428a794 describes the generator, since deleted;
    • e8a9522 names ably-go-pubsub-* agents;
    • 13712f1 has an empty body for a wire-visible change.
      Please write the squash or merge message from the final state.
  • m11: a custom WithPort/WithTLSPort still disables default fallbacks
    (options.go:590-610). REC2 has no port rule, and Java removed it.
  • m12: the WithEndpoint doc (options.go:1153-1157) is a placeholder,
    with parameter env and no resolution forms. Note that localhost:8080 is
    not treated as a hostname.
  • m13: go get github.com/ably/ably-pubsub-go installs no package,
    because the root has no Go files.
  • m14: empty or placeholder doc comments on ChannelEventEmitter and
    ChannelProperties (// CP2).
  • Nits:
    • unexported rest* names left over;
    • ablytest.NewHTTPClient vs newHTTPClient;
    • swapped go run commands in examples/README.md;
    • WithDial(nil) does compile.

Proposed next steps

  1. Agree the decisions above (versioning first, since it changes every
    import path if we go with /v2).
  2. I'm happy to open a stacked PR into integration/v2 with the fixes that
    don't depend on those decisions, if that won't collide with your ongoing
    work. Let me know. It would cover:
    • the Objects constants;
    • deterministic agent order;
    • the missing tests and agent canary;
    • restoring the generator and drift test;
    • the doc-link, doc-comment and stale-text fixes;
    • the UPDATING.md / README compile and format fixes.
  3. The decision-dependent work can follow in a second PR, or you may prefer
    to take it: deprecated-API removal, endpoint-only host logic, the version
    bump, the remaining UPDATING.md sections and the godoc approach.

🛑 Blocker (B1): this path can't carry a v2.x tag.

Go requires a /vN suffix on the module path from v2 onwards
(Go modules reference: major version suffixes).
A new path does not reset that rule. I reproduced it with a local proxy:
go get github.com/ably/ably-pubsub-go@v2.0.0 →
invalid version: should be v0 or v1, not v2.

There's also a tag clash. This repo already has v1.0.0–v1.4.1, and their
go.mod says module github.com/ably/ably-go. After the repo rename those
tags are listed for the new path, but they fail with a "module declares its
path as … ably-go" error.

Two workable options:

  1. module github.com/ably/ably-pubsub-go/v2 and tag v2.0.0
    (recommended).
    • v2.x tags are ignored for the unsuffixed path, so old-path users stay
      on v1.4.x, including a final // Deprecated: tag.
    • The old v1.x tags never apply to /v2.
    • Cost: every import path changes.
  2. Keep this path and tag v1.5.0 or higher.
    • Verified: @latest resolves v1.5.0 and works.
    • Downside: after the rename, go get -u github.com/ably/ably-go on the
      old path also jumps to v1.5.0 and fails with the reverse path mismatch.
    • Downside: a // Deprecated: tag on the old path can no longer be its
      @latest.

Commit 97a790b also says "a /v2 module path is required before release".
Whichever option we pick, the "module is now …" section of UPDATING.md,
the README install command and clientLibraryVersion need to follow it.

🧭 Recommendation: module github.com/ably/ably-pubsub-go/v2 + tag v2.0.0.

What ably-java did on integration/v2:

  • 518819db (the first commit of the branch): new group io.ably.pubsub, VERSION_NAME → 2.0.0.
  • The old io.ably:ably-java artifacts are "never published from this branch again; 1.x fixes ship from a maintenance branch". The README says 1.x gets security and critical fixes "for one year after the 2.0 release".
  • release.yaml fails a release whose VERSION_NAME ≠ the tag.

Why /v2 in Go: the README says the module path resolves only "once the repository move lands". After a rename, github.com/ably/ably-go redirects to the same repo, so both module paths see the same tags:

Old path …/ably-go @latest New path's first valid version
/v2 + v2.0.0 v2.0.0 is ignored for an unsuffixed path, so it stays on v1.x (and can carry a final // Deprecated: tag) ✅ v2.0.0
no suffix + v1.5.0 v1.5.0 becomes the candidate, but its go.mod declares a different path, so go get -u fails ❌ v1.5.0 (v1.0.0–v1.4.1 are invalid there)

/v2 also matches Java (2.0.0), and ably/ably-common#361 frames the identifiers as "new in the new major".

If chosen:

  1. Rename the go.mod module and rewrite the imports (mechanical).
  2. Set clientLibraryVersion = "2.0.0" and add the literal version canary.
  3. Cut a v1 maintenance branch from v1.4.1 and add a final deprecated v1 tag.
  4. Add a CI check that the tag, module suffix and clientLibraryVersion agree (the analogue of Java's release.yaml).

The old-path failure under the second option is inferred from the Go modules rules, not reproduced live.

(M1) Deprecated API is still here, though the PR description says it was
deleted.
This method's own comment says "TODO: Remove this in the next major
version bump to 2.x.x", and so does PublishMultipleWithParams (:98-101).

What's still present and safe to remove:

Symbol Replacement
HTTPChannel.PublishMultipleWithOptions (:184) PublishMultiple
PublishMultipleWithParams (:98, re-exported at server/pubsub/api.go:1009) PublishWithParams
Connection.RecoveryKey() (realtime_conn.go:517) CreateRecoveryKey()
clientOptions.TimeoutConnect (options.go:367-373) RealtimeRequestTimeout (internal only; there is no With… option)

Also:

  • Channels.Release: done in 34f5bd5, thanks. It's a breaking signature
    change (ctx removed, returns 90011), so it needs an UPDATING.md entry.
  • Keep Message.ConnectionKey. Its Deprecated: marker is wrong: spec TM2h
    keeps it, PublishWithConnectionKey depends on it, and Java v2 keeps it.

If we'd rather defer the rest, please change the PR description so it
doesn't claim deprecated methods were deleted.

✅ Addressed in #719 (40c126f).

Removed Use instead
HTTPChannel.PublishMultipleWithOptions PublishMultiple
PublishMultipleWithParams (and its server/pubsub re-export) PublishWithParams
Connection.RecoveryKey() CreateRecoveryKey()

Not removed, as noted above:

  • TimeoutConnect has no With… option, so it isn't public API; it can be tidied separately.
  • Message.ConnectionKey is kept, since TM2h keeps it.
  • Channels.Release was already done in 34f5bd5.

✅ The remaining items are addressed in #722 (1aa5691). Together with #719's removals, everything in this comment is now done.

  • Message.ConnectionKey: the wrong Deprecated: marker is replaced with the TM2h description. ably-java keeps the field undeprecated (Message.java:43-48, "Spec: TM2h"), and PublishWithConnectionKey depends on it.
  • TimeoutConnect: the field and timeoutConnect() are deleted. No With… option set the field and nothing called the method, so it was never public API and needs no UPDATING.md entry. ably-java never had an equivalent.

(M5) Token auth on a server client is expected to be rejected by realtime
with 40167.

The Java branch found that realtime rejects a token-authenticated connection
that declares server-side through the agent entry alone (5357618c):

40167 "a connection or request may only declare itself as a server via a
signed x-ably-clientType token claim" … Key-auth server clients are
unaffected (verified against sandbox).

Only a JWT carrying the signed x-ably-clientType=server claim is accepted
(79369859).

This package always sends ably-pubsub-server, yet it re-exports WithToken,
WithTokenDetails, WithAuthURL and WithAuthCallback, and the doc here
says servers only "typically" use an API key. No Go integration test goes
through server/pubsub or device/pubsub, so CI would not catch it.

Suggested change:

  • Replace "typically" with the actual rule: server clients must use an API
    key, or a JWT with the signed x-ably-clientType=server claim. Say the same
    in the README table and in UPDATING.md.
  • Add one sandbox integration test through server/pubsub (key auth) and one
    through device/pubsub (token auth). That also confirms 40167 from Go,
    which so far has only been verified from Java.

✅ Addressed in #722 (371ff42): document only, as ably-java does.

  • What Java did: ably-java has no product-level handling of 40167. Non-test code has no warning, no fail-fast, and nothing in Javadoc or UPGRADING.md; the handling is only in tests (5357618c, 79369859). The SDK also can't see what an auth callback or URL returns, and a token carrying the signed claim is valid, so a warning would give false positives.
  • The error: registered in Register error code 40167 for untrusted client type declarations ably-common#355 as untrusted_client_type_declaration, title "Client type declaration not signed by token".
  • pubsub: test side agents, document server token auth, drop deprecated leftovers #722 changes:
    • the package doc here: server clients must use an API key, or a token carrying the signed x-ably-clientType=server claim (today a JWT), or get 40167;
    • the server rows in the README and UPDATING.md;
    • a new "Server clients and token authentication" section in UPDATING.md.

(M6, M9) Two follow-ups to the agent change.

  1. Registration. ably-pubsub-go, ably-pubsub-server and
    ably-pubsub-device aren't in ably-common protocol/agents.json. The
    submodule (82d52d1) has only ably-go, and upstream main doesn't have
    them either. Agent analytics and MAU classification key on these
    identifiers. Could we open the ably-common PR and bump the submodule here?
    One catch: 34f5bd5 notes the pin can't currently be bumped because the
    errors.go generator can't parse the current errors.json, which is why
    90011 was hand-added to error_names.go. That generator needs fixing as
    part of the bump.
    Related: the commit message says 90011 "is registered in ably-common", but
    so far it's only in the open PR errors: Add 90011 "Channel released while not detached" ably-common#367 (pinned submodule and
    upstream main both stop at 90010). Worth confirming that lands before we
    ship code 90011.
  2. Version. clientLibraryVersion (line 14) is still "1.4.1", so v2
    traffic reports as ably-pubsub-go/1.4.1. Java bumped to 2.0.0 together
    with a hard-coded canary test. This should follow the B1 decision. A
    CHANGELOG entry and the CONTRIBUTING release steps (ably-go, v1.2.3)
    need updating too.

🧭 Update and correction, based on ably-java and ably-common:

  1. Registration: no new ably-common PR is needed (correcting my comment above). Register the Pub/Sub split agent identifiers: per-side flags and per-language families ably-common#361 ("Register the Pub/Sub split agent identifiers") is open and approved by @lmars. It already registers ably-pubsub-go, the versionless side flags ably-pubsub-server/ably-pubsub-device, and the other language families. Ask: merge Need a migration guide for users going from 1.1.5 to 1.2.0 #361, and update its ably-pubsub-go source URL if the repo is renamed. Separately, errors: Add 90011 "Channel released while not detached" ably-common#367 (90011, which Go already ships as ErrChannelReleaseInvalidState) is still open.
  2. Version: ably-java set VERSION_NAME=2.0.0 in the first commit of its v2 branch (518819db) and pinned a literal canary (RealtimeHttpHeaderTest.java:92). For Go the number follows the module-versioning decision: 2.0.0 with /v2, 1.5.0+ without (see the go.mod thread). Bump it in the same change, with a literal canary test (deferred from pubsub: test side agents, document server token auth, drop deprecated leftovers #722 for this reason).
  3. Submodule bump: not blocking. Go reads neither agents.json nor errors.json at runtime. Bumping needs the errors generator fixed for the new errors.json format (about 20 lines), but that would change the wording of about 224 of Go's 233 ErrorCode.String() texts, which appear in ErrorInfo.Error(). So it belongs in its own, deliberately reviewed PR.

(M2) The generator and its drift test were deleted.

428a794 added internal/cmd/genapi together with genapi_test.go. Its
message explains why: "a hand-written mirror of ~200 declarations drifts the
first time internal/ably changes". 19864da then deleted both and renamed
api_gen.go → api.go. Its message says only that the genapi targets
"follow the new paths".

So about 2,870 lines of re-exports are now maintained by hand, and nothing
fails if internal/ably gains an export that isn't re-exported. Users can't
reach internal/ably, so a missed re-export is a missing feature.

The good news: I re-ran the recovered generator against the current tree,
and its output is byte-identical to these files, apart from the
"Code generated" header.

Suggested change:

  • Restore it with git checkout 9450ab9 -- internal/cmd/genapi.
  • Point it at server/pubsub and device/pubsub.
  • Restore the header, //go:generate and genapi_test.go.
  • Update this paragraph.

It's also the natural place to fix M7, m5 and m14 once instead of twice.

✅ Addressed in #718 (ad4dcc7), with a test rather than by restoring the generator.

Since the hand-written files were chosen deliberately (this paragraph was rewritten on purpose), #718 keeps them and adds server/pubsub/reexport_test.go instead:

  • It fails when internal/ably exports a name that server/pubsub doesn't re-export, or that device/pubsub neither re-exports nor lists as HTTP-only.
  • Every deliberate omission is listed with its reason (Realtime/NewRealtime, WithDial, ErrChannelReleaseInvalidState, and the 32 HTTP-only names for device).
  • It uses only go/parser, with no generator and no new dependencies. I checked it fails when one re-export is removed from either package.

This paragraph now names the test. If you'd still prefer the generator back, happy to switch.

🧭 Recommendation: keep the hand-written re-exports + reexport_test.go. Nothing more to change.

ably-java: its door builders are hand-written: PubSubServer.java:121-122 describes "One method per ClientOptions property…" written by hand. There's no codegen plugin in any gradle file, no "generated" marker, and no drift or parity check at all.

Go's reexport_test.go, added in #718, already guards more than Java does: it fails whenever internal/ably exports a name an entry point doesn't re-export or deliberately list. Unless you'd prefer the generator back, this can be closed.

(B2, M8) This should say "removed", and the guide needs an endpoint
section.

If the legacy host options go (see the comment on options.go), this row
becomes "WithRESTHost → removed, use WithEndpoint". The guide then needs a section like
Java's UPGRADING.md §5, adjusted for Go:

Before After
WithEnvironment("sandbox") WithEndpoint("nonprod:sandbox")
WithRESTHost(h) + WithRealtimeHost(h) (same host) WithEndpoint(h)
Different HTTP and realtime hosts Not supported
WithRESTHost("localhost:8080") WithEndpoint("localhost") + WithPort(8080) (host:port isn't recognised as a hostname)

Resolution (matches getHostnameFromEndpoint):

  • unset → main.realtime.ably.net
  • name → name.realtime.ably.net
  • nonprod:name → name.realtime.ably-nonprod.net
  • a hostname → used as given, with no default fallbacks

Firewall: default hosts are unchanged for Go users, because main already
used main.realtime.ably.net. Only users of the removed options need to
allow *.realtime.ably.net and *.fallback.ably-realtime.com.

Other changes this guide should cover (M8):

  • Channels.Release(ctx, name) → Release(name), which returns error 90011
    unless the channel is INITIALIZED, DETACHED or FAILED (from 34f5bd5);
  • one sentence that github.com/ably/ably-go/ably no longer exists and the
    implementation is internal (that section was removed in the latest push);
  • the Ably-Agent identifier change;
  • WithAgents merging;
  • the token-auth constraint for server clients;
  • the RestClient: → HTTPClient: log prefix;
  • examples/rest → examples/http;
  • a portable import-rewrite recipe, e.g.
    grep -rl 'ably-go/ably"' --include='*.go' . | xargs perl -pi -e 's#github.com/ably/ably-go/ably"#github.com/ably/ably-pubsub-go/server/pubsub"#'.
    That handles only the main import; .../ably/objects imports need
    objects.X → pubsub.ObjectsX.

⚠️ Partly addressed in #718 (1089938).

Added to UPDATING.md:

  • Channels.Release: no ctx; returns 90011 unless the channel is detached; before/after example.
  • Requests identify as ably-pubsub-go: the identifier change, the side entry and WithAgents merging.
  • Old package gone: the statement that github.com/ably/ably-go/ably no longer exists is restored.
  • Imports: a note that go mod edit -droprequire doesn't rewrite imports.
  • Smaller changes: the HTTPClient: log prefix and examples/rest → examples/http.

Still open:

  • The WithRESTHost row and the endpoint migration section depend on removing the legacy host options, which is coming in a separate PR.
  • The token-auth constraint for server clients waits on decision 4.
  • There's no scripted import-rewrite recipe yet, only the note above.

➕ The rest of this thread is now in #719 (3c1e830).

  • "Host options are replaced by WithEndpoint": an old → new table, including WithEnvironment("sandbox") → WithEndpoint("nonprod:sandbox") and localhost:8080 → WithEndpoint("localhost") + WithPort(8080); the resolution rules; and the firewall note, scoped to users of the removed options only.
  • "Deprecated API removed": every removed symbol with its replacement, using the names v1 users actually had.
  • The WithRESTHost row is dropped from the rename table.

Still open from this thread: the token-auth note for server clients, which waits on decision 4.

✅ The last open item is addressed in #722 (371ff42): a new "Server clients and token authentication" section in UPDATING.md.

With the endpoint and removed-API sections from #719 and the other entries from #718, everything this thread listed is now covered.

ablyAgentIdentifier ranged over the agents map, so the order of the
products in the Ably-Agent header changed from one request to the next.
Every client built by server/pubsub or device/pubsub now carries at
least one extra agent, and two or more once the user passes WithAgents,
so the order was observable on every request. The same function builds
the header for HTTP requests and for the WebSocket handshake.

Sort the products by name. The entry-point tests can now assert the
exact header instead of falling back to strings.Contains, and they also
check the SDK family and side identifiers as literal strings, since
those are what Ably's traffic classification keys on and a test that
derives its expectation from the same constants cannot catch a change
to them.
The entry points aliased the LiveObjects enum types but not their
values, so a plugin author could not name objects.Operation_MapSet or
objects.Map_LWW and had to write ObjectsOperationAction(1). Re-export
the seven constants with the Objects prefix and without the underscore,
as ObjectsOperationMapSet and ObjectsMapLWW, in both entry points.

The re-exports are written by hand, and nothing noticed when
internal/ably gained a name an entry point did not re-export. Add
reexport_test.go: it fails when internal/ably exports a name that
server/pubsub does not re-export, or that device/pubsub neither
re-exports nor lists as reachable only from an HTTP client. Names left
out on purpose are listed with the reason, so an omission is a recorded
decision rather than an oversight. ErrChannelReleaseInvalidState is one
of them: callers compare ErrorInfo.Code against 90011.

Also fix the doc comments the move to the entry points left stale:
links to [Realtime], which neither package declares, and to
[HTTPChannel] and [HTTPClient] in device/pubsub, which has neither;
references to an "[ably] Pagination" package section users cannot see;
a pointer to ably-go/ably/objects/liveobjects.go; and REST wording that
named the old client type. Give ChannelEventEmitter and
ChannelProperties real doc comments, and document the forms WithEndpoint
accepts, including that "localhost:8080" is not a hostname.
The guide's rename tables and closing sentence used the ably package,
which users can no longer import, and the device example passed an API
key to an end-user client. The guide also no longer said that
github.com/ably/ably-go/ably is gone, and it did not mention several
changes already on this branch.

Rewrite the rename tables and examples against server/pubsub, use token
authentication in the device examples of both the guide and the README,
complete the list of what the device entry point leaves out, and
document the LiveObjects constants. Add sections for the
Channels.Release change (no context, error 90011 unless detached), the
ably-pubsub-go and side identifiers in the Ably-Agent header, WithAgents
merging instead of replacing, the HTTPClient log prefix and the move of
examples/rest to examples/http.

The README and guide install commands now name an entry-point package,
since the module root has no package of its own.
Three deprecated methods had a drop-in replacement, and two of them
carried "TODO: Remove this in the next major version bump to 2.x.x".
This is that bump, so remove them:

 - Connection.RecoveryKey, deprecated in favour of CreateRecoveryKey
 - HTTPChannel.PublishMultipleWithOptions, a synonym of PublishMultiple
 - PublishMultipleWithParams, a synonym of PublishWithParams, together
   with its re-export from server/pubsub

The recovery integration test asserted the deprecated getter after
close; it now checks CreateRecoveryKey only.
WithEnvironment, WithHTTPHost (WithRESTHost before the HTTP rename),
WithRealtimeHost and WithFallbackHostsUseDefault have been deprecated
in favour of WithEndpoint since ADR-119. Shipping them in the first
release of the new module would keep them until the next major
version, and WithHTTPHost would start out deprecated. Remove them from
internal/ably and from both entry points, along with the clientOptions
fields behind them, the endpoint-versus-legacy conflict check and the
legacy warnings.

Host selection now follows REC1 and REC2 only. The primary host comes
from the endpoint: main.realtime.ably.net when unset, [name].realtime
.ably.net for a routing policy, [name].realtime.ably-nonprod.net for
"nonprod:[name]", and the value itself for a hostname. Explicit
fallback hosts always win (REC2a2); otherwise an unset endpoint gets
the default fallbacks, a routing policy gets its derived ones and a
hostname gets none. A custom port or TLS port no longer suppresses the
default fallbacks, which REC2 never asked for.

The tests of legacy-only behaviour are removed. A table test covers
endpoint resolution and fallbacks, including the custom-port cases, and
the realtime fallback integration test checks that a custom port keeps
the default fallbacks. WithEndpoint documents the forms it accepts and
names its parameter endpoint.
Add two sections to the v2 migration guide: how each removed host
option maps to WithEndpoint, how the endpoint resolves to a primary
host and fallback hosts, and the firewall rules users of the removed
options may need; and a table of every removed deprecated symbol with
its replacement. Drop the WithRESTHost row from the rename table, since
that option is now removed rather than renamed.
[Integration/v2] pubsub: fix v2 re-export gaps and complete the migration guide
Merging integration/v2 brought back a rename-table row mapping
ably.WithRESTHost to pubsub.WithHTTPHost, which this branch removes.
Drop it; the removed-API table already maps WithRESTHost to
WithEndpoint. The same merge left PublishMultipleWithParams in the
re-export test's device-omission list, so remove that too.

Three corrections from review:

 - The localhost:8080 example used WithPort, which only applies when TLS
   is off. With TLS on, the default, the client connects to 443. Use
   WithTLSPort(8080), or WithTLS(false) with WithPort(8080).

 - A custom host used with WithFallbackHostsUseDefault(true) had the
   default fallback hosts. A hostname endpoint has none, so dropping the
   flag also drops them. Say that such users must pass the defaults
   with WithFallbackHosts.

 - The firewall note listed only the production domains, but the
   guide's main example migrates to nonprod:sandbox. Add
   *.realtime.ably-nonprod.net and *.fallback.ably-realtime-nonprod.com.

A few leftovers from re-reading integration/v2 at b47a147. None of them is in #722.

  1. ErrChannelReleaseInvalidState (90011) is the only Err* constant that neither entry point re-exports. The other 26 in error_names.go are re-exported from both server/pubsub and device/pubsub (e.g. ErrBadRequest), so pubsub.ErrChannelReleaseInvalidState doesn't compile. [Integration/v2] pubsub: fix v2 re-export gaps and complete the migration guide #718 recorded this as deliberate in reexport_test.go:24: "intentionally internal; callers compare ErrorInfo.Code against 90011". That reason fits every other code too, though: ErrChannelOperationFailedInvalidChannelState (90001) and ErrConnectionClosed (80017) are exported. 90011 was also public when ably: make Channels.Release return an error unless the channel is detached (RTS4c-e) #717 added it, as ably.ErrChannelReleaseInvalidState, and only became internal with the package split. If the real reason is that 90011 isn't on ably-common main yet (errors: Add 90011 "Channel released while not detached" ably-common#367 is still open), could the test say that, with a note to re-export it once errors: Add 90011 "Channel released while not detached" ably-common#367 merges? Otherwise, re-exporting it now keeps the set uniform, and Release callers get a name to compare against.
  2. README leftovers not covered by m6/m9/M10:
    • the "Go SDK versions < 1.2.14 will be deprecated from November 1, 2025" note (:33-34) is past its date and only concerns 1.x;
    • the README's only link to UPDATING.md is under "Breaking API Changes in Version 1.2.x" (:185-187). Retitling it and pointing it at "Version 1.4.x to 2.0" would also cover m9's missing-link point. The REST/Realtime limitation lists under that heading still apply.
  3. The rename route affects B1 and the ably/ably-go links. Point CI workflows at the ably-pubsub-go sdk-builds role #711 says ably-go takes the copy-then-rename route: a maintenance copy keeps ably/ably-go, so there is no GitHub redirect. The go.mod thread assumes the opposite ("after a rename, github.com/ably/ably-go redirects to the same repo, so both module paths see the same tags"). If Point CI workflows at the ably-pubsub-go sdk-builds role #711 is right, the old path is served by the maintenance copy and never sees this repo's new tags. Then neither downside listed for keeping the unsuffixed path with v1.5.0 applies: old-path go get -u won't jump to v1.5.0, and the copy can still carry the final // Deprecated: tag as its @latest. The choice is then mostly 2.0.0 versioning against rewriting every import to /v2. The same no-redirect point means the badge and issues links (:3, :181, :196) need to change in the rename window, not "whenever". Whichever path is chosen, the 2.0 website docs' Go install and import lines (github.com/ably/ably-pubsub-go/server/pubsub, .../device/pubsub) follow it.

Found while validating the 2.0 docs against integration/v2 @ b47a147.
