Summary

Follow-up to the review of #712. This PR fixes the gaps in the v2 entry points and migration guide that don't depend on any open design decision. It doesn't change the SDK's behaviour, apart from making the Ably-Agent header order deterministic.

  • Re-exports: restores the LiveObjects constants, which the package split dropped by accident (details below), and adds a test that fails whenever internal/ably gains an export that an entry point forgets.
  • Agent header: the order of products is now deterministic, and the tests check the SDK family and side identifiers as literal strings.
  • Docs: stale and dangling doc comments in both entry points are fixed, and UPDATING.md and the README now compile, use token auth on devices, and cover every user-visible change already on integration/v2.

Base: integration/v2. 3 commits, 8 files, +383 / −88, about 40 lines of which are production code. The rest is tests, doc comments and docs.

Changes

1. ably: sort the Ably-Agent products so the header is deterministic

File Change
internal/ably/proto_http.go ablyAgentIdentifier sorts the agent products before joining them. It used to range over a map, so the order changed between requests. The same function builds the header for HTTP and for the WebSocket handshake.
server/pubsub/server_test.go, device/pubsub/device_test.go Assert the family (ably-pubsub-go/) and side (ably-pubsub-server, ably-pubsub-device) identifiers as literal strings. The existing assertions derive their expectation from the same constants, so they can't catch a change to them. The merge test now asserts the exact order instead of using strings.Contains.

2. pubsub: re-export the LiveObjects constants and test the re-exports

Why the LiveObjects constants were missing

Where the constants lived Could applications use them?
main (v1) github.com/ably/ably-go/ably/objects, a public package ✅ Yes, imported directly as objects.Operation_MapSet, objects.Map_LWW, …
integration/v2 before this PR internal/ably/objects, which other modules cannot import. Only re-exports from server/pubsub and device/pubsub are reachable. ❌ No. The types (ObjectsOperationAction, ObjectsMapSemantics) were re-exported, but their values were not.
This PR Re-exported from both entry points as ObjectsOperationMapCreate … ObjectsOperationDelete and ObjectsMapLWW ✅ Yes

So this was a regression in the split, not a deliberate removal. It matters because the LiveObjects plugin isn't part of the SDK: an application supplies it through WithExperimentalObjectsPlugin and builds ObjectsMessage values itself, which needs these values. Ably's own services that implement the plugin use them today, for example to set Action: objects.Operation_MapCreate and Semantics: objects.Map_LWW. Without the re-exports, those callers could only write pubsub.ObjectsOperationAction(0) after upgrading.

Naming follows the existing Objects prefix for LiveObjects names, minus the underscore:

v1 (ably/objects) v2 (server/pubsub, device/pubsub)
objects.Operation_MapCreate pubsub.ObjectsOperationMapCreate
objects.Operation_MapSet pubsub.ObjectsOperationMapSet
objects.Operation_MapRemove pubsub.ObjectsOperationMapRemove
objects.Operation_CounterCreate pubsub.ObjectsOperationCounterCreate
objects.Operation_CounterInc pubsub.ObjectsOperationCounterInc
objects.Operation_Delete pubsub.ObjectsOperationDelete
objects.Map_LWW pubsub.ObjectsMapLWW

Why add a re-export test

The re-exports are written by hand. Before this PR, nothing failed when internal/ably exported a name that an entry point didn't re-export. That's how the constants above went missing, with CI green. The existing tests can't catch it: 36 test files import internal/ably directly, and the tests that import the public packages touch only 26–28 of the 303 re-exported names.

reexport_test.go closes that gap. It parses both entry points and internal/ably, needs no generator and no new dependencies, and fails with a message naming the missing export. I checked it fails when one re-export is removed from either package.

Files

File Change
server/pubsub/api.go, device/pubsub/api.go Re-export the 7 LiveObjects constants (table above).
server/pubsub/reexport_test.go (new) Fails when internal/ably exports a name that server/pubsub doesn't re-export, or that device/pubsub neither re-exports nor lists as HTTP-only. Every deliberate omission is listed with its reason (table below).
Both api.go files Doc comment fixes: [Realtime] → [RealtimeClient]/[Client]; device links to [HTTPChannel]/[HTTPClient] removed; dangling "[ably] Pagination" references now point to [PaginatedResult]; the ably-go/ably/objects/liveobjects.go pointer now points to [ObjectsPlugin]; REST wording that named the old client type is updated; real doc comments for ChannelEventEmitter and ChannelProperties; WithEndpoint documents the forms it accepts.

Names left out on purpose, as recorded in the test:

Name Reason
Realtime, NewRealtime Exposed as RealtimeClient/NewRealtimeClient (server) and Client/NewClient (device), which add the side agent
WithDial Its signature names an unexported type, so no caller can supply a usable argument
ErrChannelReleaseInvalidState Intentionally internal; callers compare ErrorInfo.Code against 90011
32 HTTP-only names (device only) A device client has no HTTP client

3. docs: complete the v2 migration guide

Section of UPDATING.md Change
Module path Install command names an entry-point package (the module root has none); explains that -droprequire doesn't rewrite imports
Entry points Restores the statement that github.com/ably/ably-go/ably no longer exists; the device example uses WithAuthURL + WithClientID instead of an API key; complete list of what device leaves out, and what it keeps
LiveObjects Documents the new constants
REST → HTTP Tables and example use pubsub. instead of the unimportable ably.; headings nested correctly
New: Channels.Release No ctx; returns error 90011 unless the channel is INITIALIZED/DETACHED/FAILED; before/after example
New: Ably-Agent ably-pubsub-go/<version> plus the side identifier; WithAgents now merges; alphabetical order
New: Smaller changes HTTPClient: log prefix; examples/rest → examples/http

README: install command, device snippet with token auth, and the "both packages are named pubsub" paragraph moved after the table it was splitting from its lead-in.

Review feedback addressed

Thread Status
LiveObjects constants not re-exported ✅ Fixed: restored as re-exports; regression from the split
Generator and drift test deleted ✅ Drift guarded by a test instead of restoring the generator, which keeps the hand-written approach the branch chose
Rename tables use ably. ✅ Fixed
Device omission list incomplete ✅ Fixed
README install command ✅ Fixed
Device examples use an API key (README), (UPDATING) ✅ Fixed
WithAgents docs and header order, agent tests ✅ Fixed: documented, deterministic, literal assertions
Godoc and stale doc text ⚠️ Partly: stale text and dangling links fixed; how to surface methods and fields in godoc is still an open decision

Not in this PR

These depend on decisions still open in the #712 review, or are handled separately:

Validation

All run locally on this branch:

Check Result
go build ./... ✅
go vet ./... with default, unit and integration tags ✅
gofmt -l ✅ clean
go test -tags=unit ./... ✅ all 5 packages
go test -race on server/pubsub, device/pubsub and the agent tests in internal/ably ✅
Sandbox integration tests for the agent header (TestHTTP_RSC7_AblyAgent, TestRealtime_RSC7_AblyAgent, TestRSC7) ✅
go generate ./... leaves the tree clean ✅
go build ./examples/... ✅
Every Go snippet in UPDATING.md and the README, compiled from an external module importing only server/pubsub or device/pubsub ✅
reexport_test.go fails when a re-export is removed (checked by deleting one from each package) ✅

Reviewer notes

ablyAgentIdentifier ranged over the agents map, so the order of the
products in the Ably-Agent header changed from one request to the next.
Every client built by server/pubsub or device/pubsub now carries at
least one extra agent, and two or more once the user passes WithAgents,
so the order was observable on every request. The same function builds
the header for HTTP requests and for the WebSocket handshake.

Sort the products by name. The entry-point tests can now assert the
exact header instead of falling back to strings.Contains, and they also
check the SDK family and side identifiers as literal strings, since
those are what Ably's traffic classification keys on and a test that
derives its expectation from the same constants cannot catch a change
to them.
The entry points aliased the LiveObjects enum types but not their
values, so a plugin author could not name objects.Operation_MapSet or
objects.Map_LWW and had to write ObjectsOperationAction(1). Re-export
the seven constants with the Objects prefix and without the underscore,
as ObjectsOperationMapSet and ObjectsMapLWW, in both entry points.

The re-exports are written by hand, and nothing noticed when
internal/ably gained a name an entry point did not re-export. Add
reexport_test.go: it fails when internal/ably exports a name that
server/pubsub does not re-export, or that device/pubsub neither
re-exports nor lists as reachable only from an HTTP client. Names left
out on purpose are listed with the reason, so an omission is a recorded
decision rather than an oversight. ErrChannelReleaseInvalidState is one
of them: callers compare ErrorInfo.Code against 90011.

Also fix the doc comments the move to the entry points left stale:
links to [Realtime], which neither package declares, and to
[HTTPChannel] and [HTTPClient] in device/pubsub, which has neither;
references to an "[ably] Pagination" package section users cannot see;
a pointer to ably-go/ably/objects/liveobjects.go; and REST wording that
named the old client type. Give ChannelEventEmitter and
ChannelProperties real doc comments, and document the forms WithEndpoint
accepts, including that "localhost:8080" is not a hostname.
The guide's rename tables and closing sentence used the ably package,
which users can no longer import, and the device example passed an API
key to an end-user client. The guide also no longer said that
github.com/ably/ably-go/ably is gone, and it did not mention several
changes already on this branch.

Rewrite the rename tables and examples against server/pubsub, use token
authentication in the device examples of both the guide and the README,
complete the list of what the device entry point leaves out, and
document the LiveObjects constants. Add sections for the
Channels.Release change (no context, error 90011 unless detached), the
ably-pubsub-go and side identifiers in the Ably-Agent header, WithAgents
merging instead of replacing, the HTTPClient log prefix and the move of
examples/rest to examples/http.

The README and guide install commands now name an entry-point package,
since the module root has no package of its own.
