Adds shorthand dispatch and removes one native duplicate:

  • gcb pr view|list|diff|create|comment|review|close resolves to the corresponding catalogued gh action
  • gcb run view|list resolves to the run actions
  • bare gcb pr and gcb run print the catalog help and exit 1
  • pr:close is a catalogued action; gcb pr --close points at gcb gh pr close
  • the old pr provider close branch and PullRequestAction member are deleted
  • the client help lists shorthands from GH_ACTIONS, not a second table
  • the legacy gcb pr lifecycle needed by gh-less actions remains unchanged

corepack yarn check: 299 pass.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added gcb run for running catalogued GitHub actions.
    • Added pr close as a catalogued action, available through gcb gh pr close <number>.
    • Catalogued pr subcommands can be run as shortcuts with gcb pr <subcommand>.
  • Documentation

    • Clarified the distinction between catalogued pull-request actions and flag-only pull-request lifecycle operations.
  • Behavior Changes

    • gcb pr --close is no longer supported; it directs users to gcb gh pr close.

Keep the legacy pr lifecycle for flag-only invocations, but send pr view/list/diff/create/comment/review and the new run command to the catalogued gh actions.

Walkthrough

The CLI adds catalog-based pr and run subcommand shortcuts. It adds pr:close as a GitHub action and changes the flag-only pull-request command to reject --close with guidance to use the catalog action.

Changes: CLI action routing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Catalog and close action
packages/cli/src/actions.ts, packages/cli/src/types.ts, packages/host/src/broker.ts, packages/host/src/providers/github-app.ts, test/unit/actions.test.ts, test/unit/broker.test.ts, ROADMAP.md
The action catalog adds pr:close for gh pr close, with a required pull-request number and pull_requests: write permission. The legacy pull-request action type and broker allowlist no longer accept close; the provider no longer has a close-specific PATCH branch.
Client shortcuts and lifecycle routing
packages/client/src/index.ts, packages/client/src/commands/gh.ts, packages/client/src/commands/pr.ts, packages/cli/src/index.ts, test/unit/gh-command.test.ts, test/unit/commands.test.ts, AGENTS.md, README.md, ROADMAP.md
The client derives supported shortcuts from the action catalog and routes matching pr and run subcommands through gh. The flag-only lifecycle command rejects --close with replacement guidance. Help, documentation, and tests describe or verify these routes.

Delete the pull-request close implementation and point --close at gcb gh pr close; keep the legacy pr command for actions gh cannot express.
@JounQin JounQin changed the title feat: route pr subcommands and run through gh feat: route pr shorthand and close through gh Oct 27, 2026
The dispatch list in the client was a second copy of the catalog, and it left
`pr:close` out, so `gcb pr close 7` fell through to the flag-only lifecycle and
reported a missing --host instead of closing anything. Ask the catalog instead:
a `pr <subcommand>` becomes the action when `pr:` exists, and everything
else keeps its flags.

`--close` now refuses before `--repo` is required, so the message naming
`gcb gh pr close` is what the caller sees for a bare `gcb pr --close`; the
usage text, the module comment and `actionOf`'s doc no longer claim that the
flag-only form closes. `gcb pr` and `gcb run` with no subcommand print the
catalog help, which is what `gcb gh` already does, rather than an error that
names a different command.

Docs: README documents the shorthand and the moved close; the ROADMAP line that
said the shorthand is not wired now says what is; AGENTS.md's lifecycle rule no
longer says `--close`.

Review of the two commits, plus one review commit (8787a6d) pushed to the branch.

What held up

  • pr:close is a proper catalog entry: command, positional, permissions (pull_requests: write) and a buildGhArgv that only forwards a validated number; no second argv path.
  • Removing close from PullRequestAction, from the broker's action validation and from the provider's PATCH branch is consistent — nothing else switched on that value, and the broker test's reframing (merge as the wrong anchor action) still proves the refusal.
  • The pr/run dispatch reaches runGh with the subcommand prepended, so --repo, --host, --socket and the origin fallback behave exactly as gcb gh does; the new test runs the real bin and asserts the actions the broker saw.

Fixed in 8787a6d

  1. The shorthand list ['view', 'list', 'diff', 'create', 'comment', 'review'] was a second copy of the catalog, and it left out pr:close — so gcb pr close 7 fell straight through to the flag-only lifecycle and answered --host is required while ignoring close. It now asks the catalog (Object.hasOwn(GH_ACTIONS, 'pr:' + sub)), which is the rule in AGENTS.md, and gcb pr close 7 routes to pr:close (test added).
  2. --close was checked after --repo was required, so a bare gcb pr --close reported the missing repo and never reached the message naming the replacement. Moved before it, with a test.
  3. Stale claims about closing: the pr usage line, the module comment, actionOf's doc, the ROADMAP line that said "the shorthand is not", and AGENTS.md's "--number with --close". README now documents the shorthand and that --close moved.
  4. gcb pr / gcb run with no subcommand printed gcb gh needs a command, for example: gcb gh pr view 12 — an error naming a different command. They now print the catalog help and exit 1, matching gcb gh.

Nit, not changed: the help header says the shorthands exist but does not enumerate which subcommands are catalogued; README carries that list.

corepack yarn check: 296 pass. CI green on Linux, WSL, Windows-refused and macOS at 8787a6d.

The client help now lists the pr/run subcommands from GH_ACTIONS instead of a hand-maintained second list.

Decision: generate it. The client help now builds the pr and run subcommand lists from GH_ACTIONS; there is no second hand-maintained list. Verified with gcb --help: view|list|diff|create|close|comment|review and run view|list.

Check --close whether parsed as a flag or a value, show the catalog help for bare gcb pr, and document pr:close as the GraphQL mutation.
`pr` and `run` each carried the same five lines. One function, called from
the help template, says it once and stays lazy about nothing: the values are
interpolated into CLIENT_HELP at module load, as before.

Reviewed the two follow-up commits plus my c180dbc.

6ee6c16 — help from the catalog

  • Deriving the shorthand lists from GH_ACTIONS is the right direction: the help can no longer advertise a subcommand the dispatch would not take, and close appears because it is catalogued.
  • Rendering checked: gcb help stays under 80 columns (view|list|diff|create|close|comment|review on its own line).

ab7fc58 — a valued --close and a bare pr

  • args.has('close') || args.value('close') !== undefined is correct for both shapes, and I checked parseArgs rather than assuming: with close no longer declared boolean, --close alone sets has (next token starts with -- or there is none), --close 7 and --close=7 set value. Both spellings now refuse; the test covers them.
  • The refusal still fires before --repo, so the message names the replacement either way.
  • The test helper now captures stdout from the thrown execFileSync error, which is what makes the bare-pr assertion possible without a second spawn strategy.

c180dbc (mine) — pr and run had the same five-line derivation twice; one cataloguedSubcommands(domain) called from the help template says it once. No behaviour change.

One judgement call I left alone: bare gcb pr prints the catalog help while gcb pr --help prints the flag-only usage. That is defensible — the catalog is where pr is heading and the flag-only lifecycle is what the roadmap removes — but it is a deliberate asymmetry, not an accident, so I did not flatten it.

corepack yarn check: 298 pass. CI green on Linux, WSL, Windows-refused and macOS at c180dbc.

Match gcb pr's no-subcommand behavior.
`runGh` already answers a domain with no command by printing the catalog and
returning 1, so `run` with no arguments reached that answer on its own before
the branch was added — the branch ran the same code under `--help` and threw
away its exit code to return the 1 it would have got anyway.

The test stays: it is the regression cover for that shared path. Bare `pr` is
the one that needs a branch, because the flag-only path would take it, and it
now says the same thing in one line instead of a second copy of the
print-and-return.

Reviewed 4bec34f and pushed one follow-up (88c4570).

4bec34f — bare gcb run
The outcome is right, but the branch cannot change anything: since 8787a6d, runGh answers a domain with no command by printing the catalog and returning 1, so bare run already reached that answer through case 'run': runGh(['run', ...rest]). The new code ran the same path again under --help and discarded its exit code to return the 1 it would have got. Bare pr is the one that needs a branch, because the flag-only path would otherwise take it.

88c4570 (mine) — drops the redundant branch, keeps the test (it is the regression cover for the shared path), and makes pr's branch the same answer in one line instead of a second copy of print-and-return. Also corrected the comment in runGh, which claimed gcb pr arrives there: it does not any more. All four of gcb pr, gcb run, gcb gh pr and gcb gh now print the catalog help and exit 1, checked from the bin.

CodeRabbit's three findings, read and checked

  1. pr:close was documented as PATCH /repos/{owner}/{repo}/pulls/{pull_number}; gh pr close actually calls api.PullRequestClose, which is the GraphQL closePullRequest mutation — I read cli/cli's api/queries_pr.go rather than trusting the recall in either direction. ab7fc58's corrected comment is accurate; the permission set is unchanged and still right.
  2. A valued --close (--close 7, --close=7) slipped past args.has, because with close no longer declared boolean the value goes to collected. Fixed, with both spellings tested.
  3. Bare gcb pr fell through to the flag-only path and said --repo is required. Fixed.

No thread is left unanswered on my side; each has the author's reply and the bot acknowledged two.

corepack yarn check: 299 pass, 0 fail. CI green at 88c4570 — Linux, WSL, Windows-refused, macOS — and CodeRabbit completed its re-review without new comments.
