Summary

An 86-finding automated review of main was checked finding by finding against the code (most mechanisms real, most severities inflated, about seven false). This PR fixes the ones that hold, one commit per area, then what open-code-review and CodeRabbit found on the branch itself.

  • Playback: the stream no longer stops when macOS moves the default output (headphones in or out: cpal's DeviceChanged went down the fatal path); whole frames on both sides of the ring; a paused end of track no longer fires Ended on resume; the visualizer no longer freezes on mono or low-rate devices.
  • Queue and app: Next plays the row that moved up after deleting the current one (it skipped it, shuffle too); Stop, Clear and removing the playing row can no longer be undone by an end or error already on its way; no stuck Loading when the device cannot open; seek shortcuts and Previous use the new track's start while it loads.
  • Single instance: a client that connects and stays silent no longer hangs every later launch; each message has a two-second deadline, the client gives up after three; partial messages get no ok; non-UTF-8 or multi-line paths are refused instead of rewritten; args_os and --; on the Windows pipe and the Linux abstract socket, both ends check the other runs as the same user.
  • UI: steady playlist scrolling (show_rows counted 34-point rows, laid out 30); the settings header fits the 320-point minimum; a damaged system font is skipped instead of panicking egui.
  • Lyrics: linear on stray <, timestamps share their text, 1 MiB cap, offset and ordering fixes.
  • WaveFlow handoff: the version comes from the package that owns the waveflow found on PATH; compact pre-releases and Debian epochs read right.
  • Release and CI: the tag is resolved once and checked before publishing, one run per tag, cargo-packager 0.11.8 and cargo-generate-rpm 0.21.1 pinned, HashMismatch refused, certificate cleanup on every failure path, glibc and X11 declared in the .rpm and .deb, bundle.sh validates its arguments and never leaves a half-written image; checkout pinned in CI; fork PRs labelled.
  • LICENSE: the GPL appendix carried another project's name ("TPI Flow"); it is back to the gnu.org text.

Breaking: an unknown --option on the command line is now logged and ignored instead of being treated as a file. The IPC message format is unchanged.

Open question, not changed here: the README grants "GPL-3.0 or (at your option) any later version" while Cargo.toml, rpm.toml, Info.plist and CONTRIBUTING say GPL-3.0-only.

How I tested

  • cargo fmt --check, cargo clippy --locked --all-targets -- -D warnings, cargo test --locked on Windows 11, Fedora 44 and macOS 26 (M2).
  • macOS: switched the default output to a temporary aggregate device mid-track: 1.1.0 releases the engine ("default output device changed"), this branch keeps playing. A 1 s file hands over to the next track after 1.02 s (ring drained by the callback, not the 5 s fallback).
  • Windows: a silent pipe client, nine at once, and a client that writes after one second: the slow one gets ok, the ninth is refused, slots come back after the deadline and a launch hands over in about 0.4 s.
  • Fedora (Wayland): the same with Unix sockets, a client dripping a byte every 0.5 s is cut at the deadline; the abstract-namespace fallback hands over; a Latin-1 file name no longer panics and opens in its own window; the installed WaveFlow 1.9.7 .rpm is read from /usr/bin/waveflow, an unowned waveflow earlier on PATH has no version.
  • macOS: the settings page captured at 320 points in English and German, and at 420; bundle.sh with missing arguments, a bad version and a real build.
  • The release workflow itself has not run: the glibc and ELF-requirement steps were checked against the installed 1.0.0 binary on Fedora.

The "How to Apply These Terms" appendix carried another project's name
and a filled-in copyright line in place of the GNU placeholders, so the
licence text shipped in every package was no longer the verbatim
GPL-3.0 and read as a grant for a program called TPI Flow. The appendix
is back to the gnu.org text; the project's own notice lives in the
README.
- ci.yml was the one workflow still on the mutable actions/checkout@v7
tag; it now uses the same pinned commit as the release.
- label-pr runs on pull_request_target, so a pull request from a fork
gets labels too (pull_request gives forks a read-only token). Nothing
from the pull request is checked out or run. Runs are grouped per PR
with the older ones cancelled, the title is read from the API rather
than from the event that fired, and the label lists are paginated.
- The bug form says the debug log prints full paths and the issue is
  public.
- The version job checks out refs/tags/<tag> (a branch named like the
tag no longer passes) and hands its commit to every job; publish
checks that the tag still points there. Runs for the same tag are
serialised so two publications cannot mix their files and checksums.
- cargo-packager 0.11.8 (whose NSIS template packaging/installer.nsi
copies) and cargo-generate-rpm 0.21.1 are pinned: --locked pins their
  dependencies, not the tools.
- A signature must read Valid, UnknownError or NotTrusted (the
self-signed root): a HashMismatch with our thumbprint used to pass.
The PFX is deleted in a finally block and the thumbprint is recorded
before any check, so the cleanup step always finds the certificate.
- The .rpm declares what the binary links with its symbol versions
(libc GLIBC_*, libm, libgcc_s, libasound), read from the binary as
rpm's ELF scan would, so an older distribution refuses it at install
instead of failing at launch. The .deb depends on libc6 >= the newest
GLIBC_ version referenced, and on libgcc-s1 and libegl1. Both now
list the X11 libraries winit loads for X11 sessions.
- bundle.sh checks its arguments and the version, stages the image in
a folder of its own and moves it over the previous one only once
  hdiutil has verified it.
- cpal reports DeviceChanged when the stream it built on the default
output follows a new one (headphones plugged in or out on macOS) and
keeps playing; it went down the fatal path and released the engine.
It is now ignored like an xrun.
- push_samples writes whole frames only. A push cut halfway through a
frame, then an underrun, would have shifted every later sample one
channel over until the next seek.
- A finished track's tail deadline restarts on Resume: paused for more
than five seconds in the last second of a track, Resume announced the
end at once and the tail was cut.
- The spectrum queue holds 512 frames. The ring is a fixed count of
samples, so on a mono or low-rate device the decoder runs several
seconds ahead (12 s at 8 kHz mono); with 64 frames the ones due
soonest were dropped and the bars froze for the whole track.
- The level follower moves by the audio analysed since the previous
frame, not by the emission counter with its carry, which told it
about 1.35 times the real time.
- If the decoder thread cannot start, the output stream is stopped and
joined before the error is returned.
- Removing the current row left the cursor on the row that moved up,
but Next started from the row after it, so [A, B, C] with A deleted
went to C; the app also marked B played, so shuffle skipped it too.
The queue now knows the row under its cursor has not played yet:
Next, shuffle draws and Previous take it into account, and the app no
longer moves the cursor onto it.
- Stop, clearing the queue and removing the playing row bump the
generation, so an end or an error the decoder sent just before it took
the Stop no longer starts another track.
- The deleted or cleared track's codec, lyrics and seek preview go with
it instead of showing under the next title.
- A load first makes sure the engine exists: when the device cannot be
opened the player stays as it was, with the reason shown, instead of
sitting in Loading for a Loaded no engine would send.
- While a load is pending, the position used by the seek shortcuts,
Previous and the view is where the new track starts, not the previous
track's clock; a seek during the open moves that start.
- A status line schedules the repaint that takes it down, so it does
not stay up for good on an idle player.
- The shuffle round is a HashSet: has_next runs every frame and the
round's linear lookups made it quadratic on a long queue.
- The playlist set its row spacing to zero inside show_rows, which
works out the visible range and the scroll height from the spacing in
force when it is called: rows were laid out 30 points apart while it
counted 34, so the list jumped while scrolling, ended in empty space
and stopped short of the bottom of a tall window. The spacing is set
  before the call.
- The settings header needs about 370 points with the language label
and a 190-point picker, more than the 300 left at the 320-point
minimum, so the picker ran over the title. The label goes first when
there is no room, then the picker narrows (down to 110 points) and
  truncates its text.
- A system fallback font is parsed with skrifa, egui's own font parser,
before egui gets it: egui panics at start-up on a font it cannot
parse, so a damaged or empty file is skipped for the next candidate.
- The listener read every connection to the end on its one thread,
with no deadline, and the client waited for its "ok" forever: a client
that connected and sent nothing (on Windows any local user can open
the pipe for reading) left every later launch hanging. Each connection
is now read on a thread of its own, eight at most, with a read timeout
where the transport has one (Unix sockets); the client gives up after
three seconds, named pipes having no timeout of their own.
- A message that is cut short, unreadable or over the path cap is
refused without an "ok" instead of being queued in part, a path cut
by the size limit included. The queue to the UI is bounded too.
- A path that is not UTF-8 or holds a line break was written lossily or
split into two; it is now refused and that launch opens a window of
its own. The command line is read as OsString (std::env::args panics
on a non-Unicode argument, a valid file name on Linux), options stop
at "--", and an unknown option is logged instead of being dropped as
  a file.
- On the Linux abstract namespace, which has no permissions, both ends
check the peer runs as the same user; $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR and macOS's
$TMPDIR are used only when this user owns them with mode 0700.
- --register keeps a network path working (\?\UNC\server\share became
the relative UNC\server\share), refuses a non-Unicode executable path
instead of registering a mangled one, writes each .reg script under a
name of its own with create_new (two quick language changes shared
one), and escapes Exec and TryExec in the desktop entry as string
values on top of the Exec quoting, with % doubled. --unregister only
  ignores NotFound.
- The test capture creates its directory.
- A line full of `<` with no `>` was scanned to its end once per `<`:
400 000 of them froze the window for seconds, on the UI thread where
the sidecar is parsed. The word-stamp scan is now a single pass.
- Every timestamp of an LRC line copied the line's text; a small file
with thousands of stamps in front of a long line came to hundreds of
megabytes. The stamps share one Arc<str>, and a sidecar over 1 MiB is
  not read.
- A malformed [offset:] leaves the previous one in force instead of
resetting it to zero; lines are sorted in file time before the offset
is applied, so lines it brings down to zero keep their order; and the
sidecar is found under any casing of .lrc on case-sensitive file
systems, as the doc comment promised.
Pipe names are machine-wide and ours is derived from the user name, so
another user on the machine could create it first: every launch would
then send its paths there and exit, and the real player could never
start its server. Both ends now check that the process at the other end
runs as the same user (the user SID of its token, through the pipe's
peer process id), as the Linux abstract namespace already does with the
peer uid; a launch that finds a stranger opens its own window.
On Linux the version gate took the first `waveflow` on PATH and the
version of whichever WaveFlow package was installed, unrelated to it: an
old build or an AppImage in ~/.local/bin ahead of a 2.0 package got the
"Continue in WaveFlow" button, opened empty and QuickPlay closed. The
version now comes from the package that owns that very file (dpkg -S,
rpm -qf, pacman -Qo, on the path as found and on what it resolves to);
a binary no package owns has no version and is not offered, as the
README already says.

The parser also splits a label run into its number (the compact AUR
spelling the comment claims to read): 2.0.0beta0 no longer passes as
later than beta.1, rc10 sorts after rc2. A Debian epoch (1:2.0.0-1) is
taken off with the revision instead of reading as version 1.
- release: the Windows job runs pwsh, where "$CARGO_PACKAGER_VERSION" is
an unset PowerShell variable: cargo-packager would have been installed
with an empty --version and the release would have failed. $env: there.
- queue: switching shuffle on right after the current row was removed
marked the row that moved up as played, so Next never reached it.
- audio: whole frames on the reading side too. The callback counted the
ring once and read whole frames; reading sample by sample, a frame
pushed while it filled a buffer could still start one channel over.
- ipc: each message gets two seconds in all, not a timeout per read: a
Unix client sending a byte now and then, or a silent pipe client (pipes
have no timeouts), held its slot for good, and eight of them sent every
launch to a window of its own. Unix sockets are read nonblocking; a
pipe is peeked (PeekNamedPipe) before each read, since a nonblocking
pipe read reports "no data yet" as the end of the stream.
- ipc: a client that gave up sends nothing if its connection gets through
later, so the files do not open both in the running player and in the
window this launch opened instead; on Unix the worker's own reads and
  writes time out with it.
- lyrics: the linearity test no longer asserts a wall-clock limit that a
  busy CI runner could miss.

Walkthrough

Layer / File(s) Summary
Endpoints et identité des pairs
src/ipc.rs, src/platform.rs, Cargo.toml, docs/ARCHITECTURE.md

src/audio/decoder.rs, src/audio/engine.rs, src/audio/output.rs
src/audio/spectrum.rs, src/capture.rs

Layer / File(s) Summary
Validation du tag et cohérence des builds
.github/workflows/release.yml
.github/workflows/release.yml
.github/workflows/release.yml, packaging/rpm.toml, Cargo.toml

src/ui/playlist.rs, src/ui/settings.rs, src/ui/theme.rs, Cargo.toml

.github/workflows/ci.yml, .github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE/bug_report.yml, LICENSE, .gitignore

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 9bb13

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 9bb13

The inspected changes strengthen playback state ownership and release consistency without showing broader access or increased privileges. Remaining uncertainty concerns repository tag protections, recovery from interrupted publication, and runtime paths not independently traced.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The sensitive publication boundary covers this repository’s release notes and downloadable platform packages. A release-integrity failure could affect downstream installers, but reaching the residual tag-mutation path requires authority to change release tags; that remote authorization policy was unavailable.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Release entrypoints remain version-tag pushes and manual dispatch. Default contents permission remains read-only, with contents write authority confined to publication. The PR does not add a pull-request-triggered path to this authority.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Confirm release-tag mutation restrictions and define recovery for interrupted asset replacement. These operational controls would address the remaining non-atomic publication window without treating it as a regression introduced by this PR.

- .agents/ and skills-lock.json are a locally installed review skill
that `git add -A` swept into the release commit; they are untracked
  and ignored.
- cargo-packager ran `cargo build --release` before packaging. The
workflow builds everything before the signing certificate is imported,
and the hook happened to find nothing to do, but it could compile
after the import; it is gone, and packaging takes the build already
made (README and Cargo.toml say to build first).
- The comment on Queue::remove says Next plays the row that moved up
unless shuffle already played it in this round.

The two comments on the skill's SKILL.md are left aside: the file is no
longer in the repository.

Security Misconfiguration

Reachability: Internal
Exploitability: Difficult
CWE: CWE-345

+            $isUntrustedRoot = $sig.Status.ToString() -eq 'UnknownError' -and
+ $sig.StatusMessage -match '(?i)0x800B0109|root certificate which is not trusted|could not be built to a trusted root authority'
-            if ($sig.Status.ToString() -notin @('Valid', 'UnknownError', 'NotTrusted')) {
+            if ($sig.Status.ToString() -notin @('Valid', 'NotTrusted') -and -not $isUntrustedRoot) {

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

+            let current_id = self.entries[end].id;
             return self.history.iter().rev().find_map(|h| {
                 self.entries
                     .iter()
-                    .position(|e| e.id == *h && e.failed.is_none())
+                    .position(|e| {
+                        e.id != current_id && e.id == *h && e.failed.is_none()
+ })
             });

- release: UnknownError stands for any chain failure, not only the
untrusted root a self-signed certificate has. It now passes only when
the signer's chain is that certificate alone and its one fault is
UntrustedRoot, read from X509Chain rather than from StatusMessage,
which is in the runner's language. Checked on the installed 1.1.0
executable (accepted) and a tampered copy (HashMismatch).
- queue: after removing the current row under shuffle, Previous took the
last entry of the history, which can be the row that moved up when
shuffle played it earlier; it now skips that row. Covered by a test
  that fails without the change.
